{"id":3237,"date":"2020-02-28T08:47:38","date_gmt":"2020-02-28T08:47:38","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/ksa\/?p=3237"},"modified":"2020-03-11T15:51:18","modified_gmt":"2020-03-11T15:51:18","slug":"msc-architectural-conservation-students-work-on-live-restoration-project","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/ksa\/2020\/02\/28\/msc-architectural-conservation-students-work-on-live-restoration-project\/","title":{"rendered":"MSc Architectural Conservation students work on live restoration project"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>This academic year, SPAB (Society for the Protection of Ancient Buildings) has given our <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kent.ac.uk\/courses\/postgraduate\/362\/architectural-conservation\">MSc Architectural Conservation<\/a> students the opportunity to work on a live restoration project of St. Andrew\u2019s Chapel, near Boxley Abbey, Maidstone.<\/p>\n<p>Programme Director, Dr Nikolaos Karydis writes, &#8220;Built in the 15th and the 16th century and modified in the 19th century, the \u2018chapel\u2019 is currently in an advanced state of decay. SPAB are currently surveying the building with the view to restore it and our students visited the site several times and were guided by SPAB specialists. SPAB Director <span class=\"markdgjf1rn7a\" data-markjs=\"true\" data-ogac=\"\" data-ogab=\"\" data-ogsc=\"\" data-ogsb=\"\">Matthew<\/span> <span class=\"mark4uoodzjhz\" data-markjs=\"true\" data-ogac=\"\" data-ogab=\"\" data-ogsc=\"\" data-ogsb=\"\">Slocombe introduced the Society\u2019s work and <\/span>project officer Jonny Garlick surveyed the building with the students and gave us an unforgettable tour of Boxley Abbey, focusing on previous SPAB repair work.<\/p>\n<p>During the Spring Term, the students will prepare a conservation plan, engaging in tasks that reflect their individual backgrounds. Those with an architectural background have the option to design the adaptation of the building into a new use. Students with backgrounds in other fields have several options which include researching the building\u2019s history, analysing its significance and drafting conservation strategies.
