We are delighted to announce the introduction of the Kent School of Architecture and Planning’s Foundation Year course from September 2023.
The dynamic and practical programme is specially designed to prepare students for the study of creative subjects at degree level and will offer a broad and cross disciplinary approach that reflects current practice and thinking. Uniquely the course also contains a sustainability component, through which students are asked to consider their chosen pathway in the context of climate change.
Taught by practitioners from a range of creative disciplines, and delivered in the new Marlowe studios, the central emphasis of the course is on experimental, speculative, and open-ended working. Structured around three stages, students will gradually move towards a chosen pathway, gaining and developing key practical, academic, and professional skills in the process.
Through a mix of individual and group work, students will have the opportunity to develop key skills through practice, drawing, writing, photography, video, problem solving, and contextual analysis in order to build a personal portfolio and identify individual areas of interest for further study. Each stage will culminate in a group exhibition, organised, staged, and publicised by the students.
Course director, Tim Meacham, welcomes the new era for the School: “Speaking as someone who completed a foundation year after A Levels, I consider this course the ideal bridge from school to undergraduate study. It allows students to gain confidence and independence, while beginning to identify areas of personal interest and having a lot of fun!”
