{"id":6073,"date":"2020-10-14T14:44:19","date_gmt":"2020-10-14T13:44:19","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/kentsport-news\/?p=6073"},"modified":"2020-10-14T14:44:19","modified_gmt":"2020-10-14T13:44:19","slug":"wellness-wednesday-why-do-people-still-smoke-cigarettes","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/kentsport-news\/wellness-wednesday-why-do-people-still-smoke-cigarettes\/","title":{"rendered":"Wellness Wednesday: Why Do People Still Smoke Cigarettes"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>It is over 60 years since <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bmj.com\/content\/331\/7511\/295\">the Doll Report<\/a> was published which established an undeniable link between smoking cigarettes and the development of lung cancer.\u00a0 Since then smoking has been implicated in the development of many diseases.\u00a0 It is proved that smoking cigarettes doesn\u2019t just cause disease, it leads to early death as a result of those diseases.<\/p>\n<p>So, why do people still smoke?\u00a0 Often, people start smoking as teenagers or even children.\u00a0 It is probably part of the peer pressure that is felt as an adolescent or young adult, when it\u2019s important to do the same things as your friends.\u00a0 It doesn\u2019t take many cigarettes to get hooked on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.drugabuse.gov\/publications\/research-reports\/tobacco-nicotine-e-cigarettes\/nicotine-addictive\">the nicotine because it is potently addictive<\/a>.\u00a0 Once someone has started smoking that addiction makes it very hard to give up.\u00a0 Anyone who\u2019s tried to give up smoking will tell you that the cravings are bad and the majority of people quitting comfort-eat to take away the pangs.\u00a0 Smokers have a strong association between their habit and the calming emotional effect they believe it gives them although smoking actually promotes anxiety, especially when the brain starts to register that it needs a nicotine hit!<\/p>\n<p>80% of the world population don\u2019t smoke cigarettes and to them smoking is an anti-social habit.\u00a0 Statistics found on <a href=\"https:\/\/ourworldindata.org\/smoking#:~:text=World%20Health%20Organization%20%28WHO%29%20Global%20Health%20Observatory%20%28GHO%29,all%20regions%20and%20countries%20Available%20at%3A%20Online%20here\">\u2018Our World in Data: Smoking\u2019<\/a> state that the habit is more prevalent in men but the proportion of adults who smoke is falling round the world.\u00a0 The <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/List_of_countries_by_cigarette_consumption_per_capita\">league table for cigarette consumption of 180 countries in the world<\/a> is headed up by Andorra with Luxembourg a close second, the country with substantially the lowest consumption is Brunei.
