There are two scholars that were acknowledged for their achievements throughout the scholarship programme that deserved the highest of recognition. The University of Kent aims to deliver sporting excellence and is proud to offer scholarships to students with outstanding sporting ability at both Canterbury and Medway campuses. Congratulations to Jasmine Pomeroy and James Mapley for being the University of Kent Sports Scholar of the Year for 2016/17.

Jasmine graduated with a BSc in Forensic Science with hopes to follow a career in law enforcement and James graduated in Law with a hope to qualify as a Corporate or Commercial Solicitor in the future.

Oli Prior, Kent Sport Health, Fitness and Performance Manager said, “The Scholars of the Year have gone above and beyond what’s been asked of them throughout their scholarship period. Jasmine and James are dedicated and highly motivated athletes in their respective sport and that is why they have been chosen this year. Balancing training with working and studying can be quite a difficult task, but these two have powered throughout their journeys at the University of Kent to come out on top. James and Jasmine have been a credit to the scholarship scheme and I am confident they will continue to do amazing things in their sporting careers.”

Jasmine commented, “Don’t be shy, throw yourself in the deep end a little and give it a go whatever level you are at. Whether you want to try something new, you want to improve, compete or just get involved for a bit of fun or to meet new people – there is something for everyone in most sports at the University and the teams are always welcoming. It is better to try something out than to get to the end of your degree and realise that you might have missed out on something.”

James said, “If you are focussed and dedicated to improving yourself in your particular discipline, the Sport Scholarship Scheme will give you an opportunity to excel and improve. The support network at Kent are incredibly motivated and willing to help you achieve your goals. Balancing your degree and training each week is not easy, but the rewards from the results you will achieve are by far worth any sacrifice.”

Mel Clewlow, Director of Sport (interim) at the University, said: ‘Our sports scholars are prime examples of how commitment, dedication and hard work can help achieve fantastic results. Both scholars have applied themselves to the scheme and their training which has helped them achieve massive successes and we are proud to have played a part in their sporting career.’

To stay up to date with Kent Sport news, Like UniKentSports on Facebook and follow us on Twitter and visit the Kent Sport events calendar to see what’s on.

Kent Sport’s Scholar of the Year has been chosen, but this year there’s a twist.
