Weekly news and updates

Kent Law Clinic’s weekly Tuesday meeting was led by the Student Committee Chair Emily Ham.

Student Committee updates:

  • Pub Quiz: Kent Law Clinic will be hosting a Pub Quiz at 7pm on Tuesday 12 February in Mungo’s Bar and Diner (in Eliot College) – all welcome! Tickets for the quiz are £2. All monies raised will help support the Clinic’s Makeni Kent Project, an ongoing international collaboration between staff and students at Kent and a Law Clinic at the University of Makeni (UniMak) in Sierra Leone
  • Case Discussion Session: The first new Kent Law Clinic Case Discussion Session was held from 3pm – 4pm on Wednesday (23 January) in the Moot Court (Wigoder Law Building). It was organised by the Student Committee in response to demand from law students for more opportunities to get involved with the work of the Law Clinic and featured discussions of a family law case (with Clinic Solicitor Philippa Bruce) and a housing law case (with Clinic Solicitor Vivien Gambling). Case discussion sessions offer an excellent opportunity to delve deeper into the law behind current cases being undertaken by staff and students at the Clinic
  • Law Clinic promotion: A new promotional video for the Law Clinic will be filmed in March and the Student Committee is seeking volunteers who may wish to be involved. Student Committee members will also be hosting an Instagram Takeover (on the main @KentLawSchool Instagram account) in February which also includes opportunities to be filmed. Please contact the Student Committee via kls-clinic@kent.ac.uk if you are interested in getting involved in either or both opportunities.

Law Clinic case updates:

  • Employment Law case: Law Clinic Solicitor Elaine Sherratt and Clinic Module student Evan Farrugia have negotiated a settlement for a client with a claim of unfair dismissal. The Client was originally dismissed for gross misconduct in early 2018, a charge which was reduced to ‘ordinary misconduct’ on appeal. The client was, however, still held to be dismissed due to a prior final written warning that he had received in 2016 for an incident incurring a charge of theft. Elaine and Evan focussed on learning more about the facts of the 2016 incident when they took up his unfair dismissal case at the beginning of last term. They were able to establish a strong enough argument that enabled them to negotiate a settlement agreement two days before the Client was due to attend an Employment Tribunal hearing. The settlement included an agreement for the client’s previous employer to acknowledge that there had been no dishonesty involved in the 2016 incident.
