The Student Committee
The Student Committee represents the interests and views of student members of the Clinic and meets regularly to plan work and social activities. Three members of the Committee are also appointed to attend the Management Committee of the Clinic (the Management Committee is comprised of : students; staff; and volunteer solicitors and barristers who provide advice at our advice sessions. It meets once a term.)
The Student Committee
The students elect from among their own number, making a total of eight Student Committee Members comprising:
- Chair
- Vice-Chair
- Six student members
What does the Student Committee do?
In many ways, after sounding out the Clinic’s members the Student Committee decides what to do, what to focus on, what to prioritise.
The Student Committee most likely will:
- Ascertain and reflect the views of student members
- Plans and organises Clinic events, meetings, moots, talks
- Organises social events
- Take an overview of the Clinic as a whole
- Help Blog brief reports/updates on Clinic Meetings and the Clinic’s work
- Represent Clinic students on the Clinic Management Committee
Time commitment and frequency of meetings
Ideally the Student Committee should meet once a week. The meetings need not be long. If the Committee wishes a solicitor/supervisor will endeavour to attend the meeting or the part of the meeting to assist where possible and/or provide background information/support.
Standing for the Student Committee
To be eligible for the Student Committee you must be a student of the Law School and a Member of the Clinic.
At the beginning of each academic year, students interested in putting themselves forward are invited to provide a brief statement detailing: why they want to stand; any activities they’ve undertaken in the Clinic; and any other experiences/qualities they think will be helpful. Students are then asked to attend a weekly Clinic meeting with a view to saying a few words about themselves and why they wish to stand. There will then be a vote.
