A new community garden has opened on the Canterbury campus that is designed to become an outdoor space for staff, students and members of the local community to use for a range of activities.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/header>\n

The Kent Community Oasis Garden (KentCOG) is being developed by the University\u2019s Student Wellbeing and Estates teams in partnership with local charity Kent Enterprise Trust (KET). It is designed to be\u00a0a collaborative space that anyone can get involved in<\/strong>, whether as an area to unwind and relax or to learn new skills, which is a key focus for KET and its volunteers.<\/p>\n

To this end, the garden will provide the opportunity to take part in numerous seasonal initiatives, including growing plants,\u00a0wildflowers and vegetables, as well as other related activities<\/strong>. The\u00a0garden is located along the Crab and Winkle pathway<\/a>\u00a0to the far east of the Canterbury Campus past the Parkwood accommodation.<\/p>\n

The garden is also benefiting in its design from input by\u00a0Gardeners\u2019 World<\/em>\u00a0expert Mark Lane, who lives locally and\u00a0has provided his services free of charge<\/strong>. In particular, Mark is focusing on the accessibility of the space so that it will be available\u00a0for as many people as possible to use in the future<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Richard Cottam, Head of Facilities Management in the University\u2019s Estates Department, said: \u2018The Kent Community Oasis Garden will provide a fun, engaging and educational space for anyone who wants to get involved and we are proud to be able to host it at the University. All are welcome and we hope as many people as possible will take part.\u00a0We have big plans for the garden in the years ahead and are grateful to everyone who has helped out so far.\u2019<\/strong><\/p>\n

Other organisations taking an active involvement in the garden are the\u00a0Whitstable and Herne Bay Beekeepers<\/a>\u00a0group,<\/strong>\u00a0as well as Kent Union and its student-run Gardening and Foraging Society.<\/p>\n

More information on the garden can be found at the\u00a0Kent Community Oasis Garden website<\/a>. Plants have\u00a0been donated to the garden<\/strong>\u00a0by the\u00a0Canterbury Chartham Wyevale Garden Centre<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0Vincent Nurseries\u00a0<\/a>in Herne Bay.<\/p>\n

The launch of the garden also fits in with\u00a0several of the\u00a0United Nation\u2019s Sustainable Development Goals that the University has pledged to follow<\/a><\/strong>.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/section>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
