{"id":796,"date":"2023-06-26T10:55:45","date_gmt":"2023-06-26T09:55:45","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/kei-case-studies\/?p=796"},"modified":"2024-09-04T09:33:25","modified_gmt":"2024-09-04T08:33:25","slug":"eurostar-ktp-making-tracks-and-keeping-customers-satisfied","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/kei-case-studies\/2023\/06\/26\/eurostar-ktp-making-tracks-and-keeping-customers-satisfied\/","title":{"rendered":"Eurostar KTP: making tracks and keeping customers satisfied"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>An\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ukri.org\/councils\/innovate-uk\/\">Innovate UK<\/a>\u00a0funded Knowledge Transfer Partnership (KTP) was initiated to provide\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.eurostar.com\/uk-en\/about-eurostar\/our-company\">Eurostar International Limited<\/a>\u00a0with new knowledge in advanced simulation modelling to support year on year growth in passenger numbers and revenue.<\/p>\n<h3>The approach<\/h3>\n<p>The study, led by<a href=\"https:\/\/www.kent.ac.uk\/kent-business-school\/people\/senior-leadership-team\/891\/o-hanley-jesse\">\u00a0Professor Jesse O\u2019 Hanley<\/a>\u00a0identified new ways to reduce passenger queuing and minimise the impact of train delays and network disruptions.<\/p>\n<p>Key milestones include a detailed accounting of data sources and gaps, creation of multiple digital twins of individual stations and a large fleet-level model of Eurostar\u2019s entire operation, including train movements from station to station, maintenance depots and the main control centre.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/kbs-news-events\/files\/2023\/06\/DSC_0024.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-image-20904\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/kbs-news-events\/files\/2023\/06\/DSC_0024.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1011\" height=\"672\" \/><\/a>Professor Jesse O\u2019Hanley<\/p>\n<h3>The results<\/h3>\n<p>Modelling and analysis used in the study supported greater use of evidence-based decision making at Eurostar, helping it to increase passenger throughput through better understanding of the key triggers that create queues and evaluation of proposed interventions to reduce congestion, as well as improve the robustness of train timetables by pre-emptively identifying which trains are most at risk of delay, thereby allowing managers to take preventative steps.<\/p>\n<p>Two concrete examples include analysis that was critical to informing the new layout of border controls at Eurostar\u2019s Paris Gare du Nord station and implementation of a new departure area at London St Pancras. Simulation helped to identify how best to position new border control stations and reorganise queue lanes at Paris in order to smooth passenger flows through the station and increase passenger throughput by approximately 20%.<\/p>\n<p>In London, virtual testing showed that repurposing arrival space for a new departure lounge could increase passenger throughput at peak times without adversely affecting arrivals.
