Knowledge Transfer Partnership

Following a previous successful collaboration between Kent and KROHNE involving Dr Xue Wang from the University’s School of Mathematics, Statistics and Actuarial Science, the company was keen to develop a new robust model-based approach to improve the measurement performance of their flow meters. This led to a Knowledge Transfer Partnership project graded as “Outstanding” by Innovate UK.

The Challenge

KROHNE wanted to develop a new robust model-based approach to improve the measurement performance of their flow meters, as the importance of precision measuring was paramount to their company’s success.

 The Approach

The company and the University embarked on a  Knowledge Transfer Partnership, which benefitted from the expertise of Dr Xue Wang from Kent’s School of Mathematics, Statistics and Actuarial Science, in statistical regression analysis.

“Working with the University of Kent has encouraged us to explore the uses of mathematical and statistical sciences for engineering and manufacturing technologies.”

Edward Jukes, Research and Development Manager, KROHNE

The Result

The partnership developed an advanced procedure reducing overall testing time and increasing production calibration capacity by more than 30% for some key product lines: this lead to improved product performance with enhanced functionality and a reduction in manufacturing and maintenance costs.

“The KTP has not only enabled us to develop and embed an advanced statistical approach to the production process, but also encouraged us to take a fresh view towards fundamental research.”
