{"id":7547,"date":"2019-05-21T15:35:39","date_gmt":"2019-05-21T14:35:39","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/kbs-news-events\/?p=7547"},"modified":"2020-04-30T15:59:22","modified_gmt":"2020-04-30T14:59:22","slug":"gcrf-funded-workshop-resilience-and-coastal-tourism-in-south-east-asia","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/kbs-news-events\/2019\/05\/gcrf-funded-workshop-resilience-and-coastal-tourism-in-south-east-asia\/","title":{"rendered":"GCRF Funded Workshop &#8211; Resilience and Coastal Tourism in South-east Asia"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"lead\">Dr Mark Hampton, Reader in Tourism Management at KBS, organised and led a workshop on resilience and coastal tourism in April in Yogyakarta, Indonesia. <\/p>\n<p>The expert\u00a0workshop was fully funded by the University&#8217;s GCRF (<a href=\"https:\/\/research.kent.ac.uk\/researchservices\/gcrf\/\">Global Challenges Research Fund<\/a>) in association with STUPPA INDONESIA, Partners in Development and the Doctoral Programme, Department of Architecture and Planning at Gadjah Mada University (<a href=\"https:\/\/ugm.ac.id\/en\/\">UGM<\/a>), Yogyakarta, a\u00a0long-standing international\u00a0partner of Kent.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.kent.ac.uk\/anthropology-conservation\/people\/483\/hampton-mark\">Dr Hampton<\/a> and his KBS colleague <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kent.ac.uk\/kbs\/people\/profiles\/thieme-juliane.html\">Dr Juliane Thieme<\/a> worked alongside colleagues\u00a0from across South-East\u00a0Asia with participants from Vietnam, Thailand, Malaysia,\u00a0Indonesia and the UK. This international expert workshop was set up to bring together key stakeholders from the region&#8217;s leading\u00a0universities &#8211;\u00a0in areas of\u00a0tourism management and\u00a0planning, human\u00a0geography and\u00a0architecture &#8211;\u00a0alongside environmental non-governmental organisations, government and the tourism industry.<\/p>\n<p>The three-day workshop focused on coastal tourism communities\u00a0and their\u00a0vulnerability to shock including natural disasters (earthquakes, tsunami) as well as economic and political shocks, and discussed key areas needing further research that would lead to more effective, evidence-based policy.<\/p>\n<p>Dr\u00a0Hampton said <em>&#8220;this was an exciting and stimulating event that brought together experts from across South-East\u00a0Asia.
