{"id":7206,"date":"2018-12-19T11:55:31","date_gmt":"2018-12-19T11:55:31","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/kbs-news-events\/?p=7206"},"modified":"2019-04-05T12:49:25","modified_gmt":"2019-04-05T11:49:25","slug":"student-enterprise-conference-2019-to-be-hosted-by-kent-business-school","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/kbs-news-events\/2018\/12\/student-enterprise-conference-2019-to-be-hosted-by-kent-business-school\/","title":{"rendered":"Student Enterprise Conference 2019 to be Hosted by Kent Business School"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"lead\">More than 60 inspiring speakers join the 10th annual NACUE Student Enterprise Conference that is hosted by Kent Business School in the stunning Sibson building in February 2019.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nacue.com\/\">NACUE<\/a> (National Association of College and University Entrepreneurs) was formed in 2008 by 12 enterprise society presidents. It has has grown into a national non-profit organisation with a thriving national network representing over 200 college and university enterprise societies.<\/p>\n<p>With a theme of <em>Change Makers<\/em>, the conference explores the important role which entrepreneurship, and entrepreneurs, play in bringing about social change and industry disruption.<\/p>\n<p>Taking place over the weekend of <strong>23-24 February 2019<\/strong>, the conference will bring together students from across the UK to explore the importance of entrepreneurship through talks, practical workshops and networking opportunities. The two days packed\u00a0full\u00a0of fun sessions\u00a0with speakers guarantees to not only inspire you, but to equip\u00a0you\u00a0with the tools to start your business.<\/p>\n<p>Speakers announced so far include Robert Forkan,\u00a0co-founder of\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/nacue.us18.list-manage.com\/track\/click?u=1361ed27ac107d7cc6aa98cd7&amp;id=883b88b8d3&amp;e=98e93df4d0\">Gandys<\/a> who is Saturday\u2019s keynote speaker. Robert founded the firm with his brother, Paul, after narrowly surviving the Boxing Day tsunami of 2004,\u00a0which killed their parents. The brothers\u00a0wanted to \u2018<em>start something with real purpose\u2019<\/em> so saved up enough money to start\u00a0Gandys, which sells\u00a0flip flops. A\u00a0percentage of their profit helps\u00a0to build orphanages through its charity <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gandyslondon.com\/gandys-foundation\"><em>The\u00a0Gandys\u00a0Foundation<\/em><\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>On Sunday, the keynote speaker is Jonas Huckestein, co-founder of <a href=\"https:\/\/monzo.com\/\">Monzo Bank<\/a>, a UK start-up which has no physical banks, instead using Android smartphone apps. Jonas served as the Chief Technology Officer when Monzo started, during this time the team grew from a few engineers to over 100.<\/p>\n<p>Plus University of Kent alumnus, James Buckley-Thorp, will be joining the Student Enterprise Conference 2019. James, founder of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rupertandbuckley.com\/\">Rupert and Buckley<\/a>, started his firm with around 600 pairs of socks produced in his dorm room, turning this from \u00a340 into a \u00a33-million company.
