On April 4 these young entrepreneurs pitched their ideas to a panel of experts in a Dragons\u2019 Den style competition.<\/p>\n<p>Over three months, students from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kent.ac.uk\/kbs\/\">Kent Business School<\/a>, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cs.kent.ac.uk\/\">School of Computing<\/a> and the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kent.ac.uk\/economics\/\">School of Economics<\/a> have taken part in the co-curricular programme which delivers key knowledge on starting a business as well as developing entrepreneurial skills.<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/kent-business-matters\/2018\/03\/01\/the-business-start-up-journey-2018\/\">Business Start-up Journey<\/a> offers students the chance to participate in practical-based group sessions, led by experts, in fields ranging from market research to e-commerce, finance and law. It also includes one-to-one consultations with the programme\u2019s Entrepreneur in Residence, <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/kbs-news-events\/2016\/10\/introducing-adam-smith-aspire-entrepreneur-in-residence\/\">Adam Smith<\/a>, and Tech Entrepreneur, <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/kent-business-matters\/2017\/09\/21\/the-business-start-up-journey-meet-jason-marshall-aspire-tech-entrepreneur-in-residence\/\">Jason Marshall<\/a>. In addition there are mentoring sessions with experienced entrepreneurs from a wide spectrum of business areas including finance, hospitality, retail and fashion.<\/p>\n<p>There has been a huge amount of enthusiasm and hard work put in by those taking part. From cakes to skin creams, tech to clothing, this year\u2019s cohort have once again developed their ideas into businesses using the guidance and expertise they have been given. Throughout the journey the participants had the full use of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kent.ac.uk\/kbs\/facilities\/aspire\/\">ASPIRE<\/a> lab space.<\/p>\n<h2>Pitching Day \u2013 Pop-up High Street<\/h2>\n<p>The final event of the BSUJ on Wednesday 4 April began with a pop-up high street in the Atrium of the Sibson building, home of Kent Business School. Student businesses filled market stalls with everything from bespoke tailoring to nail care products, street wear to skin cream. There was also a display of innovative business ideas, showcasing the depth of propositions the programme had developed.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/kbs-news-events\/files\/2018\/04\/27380737898_8127892d48_o.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-2375 size-large\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/kbs-news-events\/files\/2018\/04\/27380737898_8127892d48_o-1024x744.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1024\" height=\"744\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<h2>Pitching Day \u2013 The Pitch<\/h2>\n<p>Friends and family of the finalists were among those who filled the seats of Sibson\u2019s Lecture Theatre Two as well as supporters of the BSUJ drawn from the region\u2019s business community. Eben Kouao, a participant in a previous Business Start-Up Journey, gave a brief presentation on how his experiences on the programme had helped him to found his current e-marketing businesses while still a student at the University.<\/p>\n<p>After a brief introduction, the pitching started in earnest with each finalist or group taking the spotlight to explain their business proposition to the panel of judges. As well as delivering their eight-minute pitch, the finalists also fielded challenging questions from the judges.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/kbs-news-events\/files\/2018\/04\/40540039784_8535dc612a_o.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-2378 size-large\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/kbs-news-events\/files\/2018\/04\/40540039784_8535dc612a_o-1024x719.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1024\" height=\"719\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The judges for the event were:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Kevin Bardwell \u2013 Santander Universities Relationship Manager<\/li>\n<li>Laura Bounds \u2013 Owner and Managing Director of Kent Crisps and Kentish Oils<\/li>\n<li>Dean Johnson \u2013 Managing Director of medi-tech company Haag Streit UK<\/li>\n<li>Steve Lowe \u2013 Managing Director of leading textile supply firm Elsatex<\/li>\n<li>Jaye Graham \u2013 Final-year Economics student and winner of last year\u2019s BSUJ<\/li>\n<li>Bal Sandher \u2013 Kent graduate and founder of Hectic Lifestyles.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>The Winners<\/h2>\n<p>The judges commended all the finalists for the high quality of their pitches and diversity of the business ideas presented.
