{"id":5662,"date":"2017-06-20T16:11:55","date_gmt":"2017-06-20T15:11:55","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/kbs-news-events\/?p=5662"},"modified":"2022-02-16T15:44:44","modified_gmt":"2022-02-16T15:44:44","slug":"business-start-up-journey-2017-winner-announced","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/kbs-news-events\/2017\/06\/business-start-up-journey-2017-winner-announced\/","title":{"rendered":"Business Start-Up Journey 2017 Winner Announced"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"lead\">Student Jaye Graham founder of a pet matching app has been awarded \u00a31,000 after her pitch to a panel of judges.<\/p>\n<p>Jaye, a second-year Economics and Sociology student, won the overall competition, receiving a \u00a31,000 investment for her business, <a href=\"http:\/\/pawfectmatch.org.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Pawfect Match<\/a>, which utilises a Tinder-style interface to match homeless cats and dogs with potential owners. This investment was double the event\u2019s usual \u00a3500 prize as the judges were so impressed by the idea.<\/p>\n<p>Two students from Kent Business School (KBS) were awarded \u00a3500 towards their ideas after the judges felt compelled to provide funding to their projects.\u00a0These awards went to Vasu Sarin for his business Tab Care Limited, which uses wearable technology to allow care homes to remotely monitor elderly people\u2019s health, and Anton Carter for his app Phonic that scans text and reads it aloud to aid learning.<\/p>\n<p>In total eight students took part in the final, marking the culmination of the nine-month Business Start-Up Journey programme which began in November 2016 and is run by the KBS\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kent.ac.uk\/kbs\/aspire\/\">Accelerator Space for Innovation and Responsible Enterprise (ASPIRE)<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/kbs-news-events\/files\/2017\/06\/bsuj-certs.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-5664 size-full\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/kbs-news-events\/files\/2017\/06\/bsuj-certs.jpg\" alt=\"bsuj-certs\" width=\"750\" height=\"493\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/kbs-news-events\/files\/2017\/06\/bsuj-certs.jpg 750w, https:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/kbs-news-events\/files\/2017\/06\/bsuj-certs-300x197.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 750px) 100vw, 750px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Around 100 students entered the Business Start-Up Journey, each meeting with ASPIRE entrepreneur-in-residence Adam Smith to discuss their\u00a0business ideas. Students attended a series of workshops exploring and explaining various areas of essential business knowledge such as sources of finance, marketing, and intellectual property rights. Eighty ideas were submitted for consideration and forty were chosen for progression. These students were then invited on a two-day business \u2018bootcamp\u2019 where they collaborated, pitched to each other and took part in team-building to further hone their ideas.<\/p>\n<p>From these final ideas, the eight pitchers and three video submissions were selected for the final event where they presented their ideas to a panel of judges:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Daniel Rubin \u2013 Founder and Executive Chairman Dune Group<\/li>\n<li>Steve Lowe \u2013 MD Elsatex<\/li>\n<li>Adam Baker \u2013 Santander Universities<\/li>\n<li>Dean Johnson \u2013 \u00a0CEO Haag Streit UK<\/li>\n<li>Brenda Okandju \u2013 KBS alumna, Business Start-Up Journey finalist (2015-16)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The Business Start-Up Journey will also send\u00a0two students to the European Innovation Academy \u2013 a three-week tech start-up festival which takes place around the world.<\/p>\n<p>Congratulations to all the students from all at Kent Business School.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.kent.ac.uk\/kbs\/start-up\/journey.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Find out more about the Business Start-Up Journey.<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Student Jaye Graham founder of a pet matching app has been awarded \u00a31,000 after her pitch to a panel of judges.
