{"id":22482,"date":"2024-10-23T15:50:53","date_gmt":"2024-10-23T14:50:53","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/kbs-news-events\/?p=22482"},"modified":"2024-10-29T15:51:05","modified_gmt":"2024-10-29T15:51:05","slug":"collaboration-to-drive-greener-travel-between-the-uk-and-europe","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/kbs-news-events\/2024\/10\/collaboration-to-drive-greener-travel-between-the-uk-and-europe\/","title":{"rendered":"Collaboration to drive greener travel between the UK and Europe"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Kent is once again set to support sustainable innovation in the shipping industry as part of a consortium which has successfully applied to the Innovate\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/apply-for-innovation-funding.service.gov.uk\/competition\/1892\/overview\/9fa93227-f92f-421a-bcdb-0babc362c6e7\">UK Smart Shipping Acceleration Fund<\/a>\u00a0competition from the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/government\/organisations\/department-for-transport\">Department for Transport (DfT)<\/a>.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The project will see Kent\u2019s\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/research.kent.ac.uk\/celsa\/\">Centre for Logistics and Sustainability Analysis (CeLSA)<\/a>, based in\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.kent.ac.uk\/kent-business-school\">Kent Business School<\/a>\u00a0and supported by the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.kent.ac.uk\/engineering\">School of Engineering<\/a>, work with\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.avl.com\/en-gb\">AVL<\/a>\u00a0and ferry operator,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dfds.com\/en-gb\/passenger-ferries\/offers\/ferries-to-france?utm_source=google&amp;utm_medium=cpc&amp;utm_campaignID=11643764289&amp;utm_adgroupID=112743142785&amp;keyword=dfds&amp;matchtype=e&amp;device=c&amp;gad_source=1&amp;gclid=Cj0KCQjwveK4BhD4ARIsAKy6pMJaI9WOWcbMgd23PeRmk_nP5Jn1qX-kBHJ4LfPBtt-PMHMeOTEFR14aAjUnEALw_wcB&amp;gclsrc=aw.ds\">DFDS<\/a>, to explore the feasibility of different electric ferry (e-vessel) designs for future deployment on the Short Straits routes between the Kent coast and northern France.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Identifying the most viable e-vessel designs will require the consideration of ship, propulsion and battery systems across a wide range of operating scenarios.\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.kent.ac.uk\/kent-business-school\/people\/2564\">Dr Ramin Raeesi<\/a>, Director of CeLSA,\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">will support this by developing a dashboard to help inform DFDS\u2019s optimal strategic and operation decision-making process with the deployment of new electric ferries.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">It\u2019s anticipated that the results from this project will play a crucial role in DFDS achieving their goal of deploying battery electric ships on the Short Straits from 2030. It will also have a wider impact in decarbonisation of the maritime sector as the key insights such as the reduce in greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions will be shared with the industry and government departments such as the DfT, the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/government\/organisations\/maritime-and-coastguard-agency\">Maritime and Coastguard Agency (MCA)<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ukri.org\/councils\/innovate-uk\/\">Innovate UK.\u00a0<\/a><\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">CeLSA has a strong track record of securing Innovate UK funding and, having led the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/kei-case-studies\/2022\/05\/20\/bringing-clean-ferry-power-to-dover\/\">Dover Clean Ferry Power (DCFP) project<\/a>\u00a0and played a key role in the Green Corridor at Short Straits (GCSS) project, has a background knowledge on the electrification of the Short Straits ferries. The Centre is known for its world-class research portfolio in management science and operational research and addresses transport, logistics, and supply chain problems with sustainability considerations.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Dr Ramin Raeesi said: \u2018We are building on our extensive track record and previously completed transport decarbonisation projects, particularly those completed at Dover. It will see us lead the development of a digital and data-driven decision support tool that enables a complete cost\/benefit and techno-economic analysis of the options and informs the strategic and operational decisions DFDS is currently making with regard to the ordering, deployment and best operational practices of e-vessels. This project is a crucial step forward in bringing the channel crossing decarbonisation closer to reality.\u2019<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Matthias Wellers, Managing Director, AVL Powertrain UK Ltd, said: \u2018We are excited to be at the forefront of this transformative project.
