You\u2019re choosing a higher education course and want to make the right decision. You\u2019ve likely checked out the local area, the campus, the course structure, the rankings, and the student experience.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

But there\u2019s one term you might see next to a university course and think \u2013 what is that?\u00a0Accreditation.<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n

Here, with the help of Professor Catherine Robinson,<\/a> we give the five reasons why accreditation should be top of your university check list.<\/p>\n

    The dictionary describes an accreditation as \u2018the act of certifying an educational institution or program as meeting all official formal requirements of academic excellence\u2019. In other words, an impartial organisation has spent time rigorously checking everything about an institution and rubber-stamped it.<\/p>\n

    \u201cAccreditations are a kite-mark of quality,\u201d explains Professor Catherine Robinson, Deputy Dean of Kent Business School and acting Head of Accreditations. \u201cThey offer reassurance that the School not only provides the acceptable content of a degree but excels in key areas of provision.<\/p>\n

    \u201cThe processes are rigorous, internationally judged and regular to ensure that accredited business schools are not only excellent but LEADERS in the business education community on a global scale.\u00a0 Being part of that community ensure we are able to share international experiences with our local stakeholders \u2013 businesses, students and communities.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

    1. It means we have high standards <\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

      Our recent\u00a0EQUIS<\/a>\u00a0accreditation was an assessment of our School overall. To receive EQUIS accreditation, we worked hard to meet high standards in governance, programmes, students, faculty, research, internationalisation, ethics, responsibility, and sustainability, as well as engagement with the world of practice.<\/p>\n

      We are also accredited by\u00a0AACSB<\/a>\u00a0International (AACSB) who describe their accreditation process as a \u2018voluntary, nongovernmental process that includes a rigorous external review of a school\u2019s mission, faculty qualifications, curricula, and ability to provide the highest-quality programs.\u2019<\/p>\n

      AMBA,<\/a> who also approved our School, suggest they \u2018foster innovation in global postgraduate management education.<\/p>\n

      Accreditations can benchmark important areas of society that universities drive change in – like gender and race inequality.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

      3. It highlights a dedication to doing the right thing<\/strong><\/p>\n

      Kent Business School, for instance, holds the\u00a0Athena Swan Silver Award,<\/a>\u00a0which means we are dedicated to advancing the representation of women in various areas including business as well as professional and support roles, and for trans staff and students.<\/p>\n

      Our\u00a0Small Business Charter Award<\/a>\u00a0looks at our relationship with SMEs (Small & Medium sized Enterprises) in the local area.<\/p>\n

      \u201cThe Small Business Charter demonstrates the important role that the Business School plays in facilitating our own and wider university engagement with SMEs as well as highlighting our direct contribution to local economic growth through student entrepreneurship,\u201d explains Professor Robinson. \u201cSMEs feed into our teaching, our research as well as our wider civic mission.\u201d<\/p>\n

      4. It adds Clout to Courses<\/strong><\/p>\n

      Accreditations from bodies such as the\u00a0Chartered Institute of Marketing (CIM)<\/a>\u00a0to the Accountancy bodies like\u00a0ACCA<\/a>\u00a0or investment organisations such as\u00a0CFA Institute<\/a>\u00a0ensure that specific courses stand out from the crowd for quality, but they also offer added value for students.<\/p>\n

      Courses accredited by industry bodies often offer exemptions from exams and a qualification that is recognised instantly within the given industry. They may also provide extras such as regular networking events and access to mentors. The more accreditations a course has, the more added value you get, we have five on our\u00a0BSc Accounting and Finance<\/a>\u00a0course alone!<\/p>\n

      \u201cProfessional accreditations are specific to areas of study and demonstrate professional relevance of the materials you\u2019re learning on your degree and ensure you\u2019re fully up to date when leaving the course of the latest industry standards,\u201d explains Professor Robinson.<\/p>\n

      1. There\u2019s a guarantee with frequency<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

        Accreditations are renewed regularly, often every three years or every five. Course accreditations are reviewed every academic year. This means you will always have clarity that as an institution, we are still holding up to the standards of our assessments.<\/p>\n

        \u201cAccrediting bodies regularly update their standards and criteria, on the basis of the changing landscape of business and management. As part of these communities, we feed in with our latest developments and contribute to the direction of travel,\u201d concludes Professort Robinson. \u201cRegular visits ensure we maintain and build on the high standards we set ourselves.\u201d<\/p>\n

        So, now you know what it all means, you\u2019ll see that there really is NO downside to choosing a Business School based on its Accreditation-cred. It\u2019s a good job we\u2019re swimming in it at Triple Accredited Kent Business School, eh?<\/p>\n
