{"id":16584,"date":"2022-08-03T10:23:21","date_gmt":"2022-08-03T09:23:21","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/kbs-news-events\/?p=16584"},"modified":"2024-07-30T11:53:11","modified_gmt":"2024-07-30T10:53:11","slug":"former-kbs-student-yolanda-brown-appointed-chair-of-bpi","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/kbs-news-events\/2022\/08\/former-kbs-student-yolanda-brown-appointed-chair-of-bpi\/","title":{"rendered":"Former KBS Student YolanDa Brown Appointed Chair of BPI"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Former Kent Business School student <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kent.ac.uk\/kent-business-school\/news\/15150\/yolanda-i-am-a-businessperson-using-lessons-from-kbs-every-day\">YolanDa Brown<\/a> has been appointed as Chair of the<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bpi.co.uk\/\"> BPI \u2013<\/a> the representative voice for independent and major record labels across the UK.<\/p>\n<p>BPI organises the annual BRIT Awards, The Mercury Prize and co-owns The Official Charts.<\/p>\n<p>YolanDa takes over from film producer and ex-head of Sony Music UK Ged Doherty, who announced in February that he would be standing down after seven years in the role.<\/p>\n<p>A champion for the importance of music education, YolanDa, who studied management science and a PhD at KBS, is Chair of Youth Music, on the national council of the Arts Council, a trustee of PRS Foundation, an ambassador for both the Prince\u2019s Trust and London Music Fund and a champion for the children\u2019s mental health charity Place2Be. \u00a0Additionally she sits on the advisory board of the London Philharmonic Orchestra and contributes to the Government\u2019s advisory panel on Music Education.<\/p>\n<p>YolanDa is also a MOBO Award winning saxophonist who in the past has benefitted from Music Export Growth Scheme funding to cross borders with her music.\u00a0 She is a respected broadcaster across TV and Radio and known to younger generations through her eponymous series for CBeebies, &#8220;YolanDa\u2019s Band Jam&#8221; and the music she composes for the iconic Sesame Street.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>YolanDa said: <em>\u201cThere is something special about British music \u2013 our artists across many genres and generations have been the soundtrack to people\u2019s lives.\u00a0The last\u00a0few\u00a0years have been challenging\u00a0for our music community\u00a0\u2013 we\u2019ve had to evolve, listen more\u00a0and\u00a0show\u00a0greater\u00a0empathy,\u00a0address\u00a0past\u00a0issues\u00a0and collaborate\u00a0to a\u00a0much\u00a0greater extent. There\u2019s still more to do, but there are also so many exciting opportunities\u00a0that lie\u00a0ahead.<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><em>\u201cI\u00a0am honoured to\u00a0take on this role as Chair of the BPI. A big thank you to\u00a0my predecessor\u00a0Ged Doherty for his drive and dedication, which I will\u00a0continue to build on. I\u00a0am looking forward to working with the entire BPI Council and members, CEO Geoff Taylor and his team,\u00a0<\/em><em>labels of all shapes and sizes, and of course\u00a0artists and the wider industry bodies as we\u00a0all\u00a0continue to fly the flag for British music.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Geoff Taylor, Chief Executive BPI, BRIT Awards &amp; Mercury Prize, said: <em>\u201cI am delighted that someone of YolanDa\u2019s extraordinary talent and creative energy is joining the BPI as its new Chair, and I also welcome the fresh perspective that she will bring to our work at this pivotal and exciting time for British music. Her breadth of experience drawn from across so many parts of the music community will prove invaluable as we continue to support the success of our label members and their artists globally.\u201d <\/em><\/p>\n<p>Ged Doherty, outgoing BPI Chair, said: <em>\u201cThis is an exciting appointment for the BPI, and I congratulate YolanDa and wish her all the very best in the role.\u00a0 It\u2019s been an honour serving the BPI, its Council and hundreds of wonderful members, and I thank Geoff and his great team for their valued support as well as the members of the BPI\u2019s Equity and Justice Advisory Group for their never-less-than passionate contributions.
