{"id":15675,"date":"2022-05-18T13:44:07","date_gmt":"2022-05-18T12:44:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/kbs-news-events\/?p=15675"},"modified":"2022-05-19T11:57:31","modified_gmt":"2022-05-19T10:57:31","slug":"expert-view-why-our-planet-needs-an-or-revolution-in-southeast-asia","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/kbs-news-events\/2022\/05\/expert-view-why-our-planet-needs-an-or-revolution-in-southeast-asia\/","title":{"rendered":"Expert View: &#8216;Why our Planet Needs an Operational Research Revolution&#8217;"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">&#8220;The Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) are at the heart of the United Nation 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and provide worldwide guidance to eradicate poverty and hunger, achieve gender equality, ensure peace and prosperity for all, and protect our planet. <\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:0,&quot;335559740&quot;:240}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Goal 13 \u201cTake urgent action to combat climate change and its impacts\u201d is crucial to accelerate progress on the 2030 Agenda, as it is strictly integrated with all the other goals. Failure to build resilience to climate-related hazards and natural disasters, in fact, will have cascading negative impacts on many other global challenges, such as food security and production, human health, sustainable and inclusive growth. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Also, as recently underscored by the <\/span><i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change\u2019s Sixth Assessment Report on Impacts, Adaptation and Vulnerability<\/span><\/i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, climate change is increasingly and disproportionately affecting\u202fthe world\u2019s most vulnerable countries<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, in turn<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">increasing poverty and social inequities.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:0,&quot;335559740&quot;:240}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Operational Research (OR) is the discipline of applying advanced analytics tools, such as data analysis, simulation and mathematical optimisation, to support decision making, improve operational efficiency and streamline the use of scarce resources. <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">As such, <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">OR has significant potential to find innovative solutions to climate change and environmental challenges.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:0,&quot;335559740&quot;:240}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">In the developed world, OR has been successfully applied to solve problems in the areas of disaster management, circular economy and waste management, environmental restoration planning, sustainable food supply chains and smart transport. <\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">As an example, researchers in the Department of Analytics, Operations and Systems at Kent Business School have worked on projects to mitigate the impact of flood disasters in Vietnam through optimised investment planning, to reduce traffic and carbon emissions at the Port of Dover, and to transition to a more sustainable mode of production and consumption in Europe through implementation of Circular Economy strategies.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:0,&quot;335559740&quot;:240}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Unfortunately, most countries in the developing world, including some Southeast Asia countries heavily affected by climate-related disasters such as Indonesia and Vietnam, lack the expertise to develop and apply relevant OR methodologies.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:0,&quot;335559740&quot;:240}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">To redress this gap, I recently led an EPSRC funded project <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kent.ac.uk\/kent-business-school\/news\/15269\/kbs-project-aims-to-help-improve-sustainability-in-southeast-asia\">(CREST-OR)<\/a> to raise OR awareness in Southeast Asia (SEA) and build local capacity in the use of OR for solving challenges in the areas of disaster management, food security, resilient transport infrastructure and smart cities.
