She explored whether women are able to participate in the business world and be recognised as \u2018proper\u2019 entrepreneurs. She found that this success is dependent on alignment with the conventional masculine norms of entrepreneurship.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;134233118&quot;:true,&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:240}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">Published in the\u202f<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/journals.sagepub.com\/doi\/10.1177\/02662426211013791\"><i><span data-contrast=\"none\">International Small Business Journal<\/span><\/i><\/a><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u202fand based on an interview study of women business owners, her study highlighted the interviewees\u2019 belief that entrepreneurship and motherhood are compatible but challenged that mumpreneurship represents a new feminised identity and a different way of doing business.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;134233118&quot;:true,&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:240}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\"><em>&#8220;The mumpreneur identity has undoubtedly had a positive impact on the way women\u2019s entrepreneurship is viewed,\u2019<\/em> explains Professor Lewis. \u2018<em>Nevertheless, our study demonstrates that it has not disrupted the dominant discourses of masculine entrepreneurship or gendered power relations in the field. Women are still in a position of being committed to both sides of the balance between business and motherhood but are devalued as entrepreneurs when devoting time to their children rather than business.&#8221;<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p><em><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/kbs-news-events\/files\/2022\/03\/Samantha-Evans-750-x-493.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-15046\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/kbs-news-events\/files\/2022\/03\/Samantha-Evans-750-x-493.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"750\" height=\"493\" \/><\/a>\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><b><span data-contrast=\"none\">Dr Samantha Evans \u2013 The Impact of Covid-19 on Working Mothers<\/span><\/b><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Dr Evans was published widely last year with her thought leadership article which examined the impact of the pandemic on mothers.\u00a0 Her article reflected on the ideas that Covid-19 and lockdown measures had<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\"> \u2018turned back the clock\u2019 by overlooking the difficult labour market and caring inequalities currently faced by women.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;134233117&quot;:true,&quot;134233118&quot;:true,&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:360,&quot;335559740&quot;:240}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u201cIncreasing evidence shows that women have shouldered the burden of childcare with the closure of schools and nurseries during the pandemic,\u201d said Dr Evans. \u201cMoreover, women work disproportionately in industries affected by Covid (such as retail and hospitality) and are more likely to be furloughed.\u201d<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:360,&quot;335559740&quot;:240}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">Dr Evans also explored the idea that women are less likely than men to have stayed closely in touch with their workplace, are more anxious about their job or promotion prospects and are experiencing higher stress levels than men during the pandemic.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;134233117&quot;:true,&quot;134233118&quot;:true,&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:360,&quot;335559740&quot;:240}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Today, she suggests there are signs of \u2018hope\u2019 with flexible working offerings more commonplace which can certainly support working parents in their efforts to juggle childcare with work. She does stress, however that there is still much more to be done: <\/span><\/p>\n<p>Dr Evans says: \u201cWith<em> working mothers reporting higher rates of stress, depression and high working hours, one in three mothers are thinking about downshifting their careers or stepping out of the workforce entirely. This shows there is still a lot employers need to be doing to ensure working mothers are not penalised in the workplace because of the pandemic.\u201d\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.kent.ac.uk\/kent-business-school\/people\/2460\/lewis-patricia\">Patricia Lewis<\/a> is a Professor of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kent.ac.uk\/courses\/undergraduate\/1399\/management\">Management<\/a> at Kent Business School. She has won several awards for papers in research covering issues in gender in management and entrepreneurship.
