To mark Transgender Day of Visibility she explains the support provided by the University for those in the transgender community. Transgender, or Trans, is as an umbrella term to describe people whose gender is not the same as, or does not sit comfortably with, the\u202fsex\u202fthey were assigned at birth.<\/p>\n<p style=\"background: white;margin: 0cm 0cm 18.0pt 0cm\"><strong><span style=\"font-family: 'Calibri',sans-serif;color: #333333\">Tell us about your role within the University of Kent<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"background: white;margin: 0cm 0cm 18.0pt 0cm\"><span style=\"color: #333333\">I work within Student Support &amp; Wellbeing at the Medway campus and have supported trans students as part of my role. However, outside of work, I am also a part-time Open University student, and have recently completed a Doctorate in Education where my area of research was investigating the experiences of transgender students in higher education in the UK.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"background: white;margin: 0cm 0cm 18.0pt 0cm\"><strong><span style=\"font-family: 'Calibri',sans-serif;color: #333333\">What are the University policies in place to support trans community?<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"background: white;margin: 0cm 0cm 18.0pt 0cm\"><span style=\"color: #333333\">The University\u2019s\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"color: black\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.kent.ac.uk\/studentservices\/files\/Trans%20Student%20Support%20Policy%2020%20Feb%202018.pdf\"><span style=\"color: #05345c\">Trans Student Support Policy<\/span><\/a><\/span><span style=\"color: #333333\">\u00a0sets out its commitment to trans students, including ways of providing practical support and guidance to students before, during and after transitioning.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"background: white;margin: 0cm 0cm 18.0pt 0cm\"><span style=\"color: #333333\">Transgender students have the right to choose whether or not to disclose their gender identity, and to whom they disclose it, and the circumstances where this may be disclosed. They also have the right to ask the University to update its documents, records and systems to reflect their affirmed gender, and to discuss the level and type of study support during their transition that they feel is appropriate to them. <\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"background: white;margin: 0cm 0cm 18.0pt 0cm\"><strong><span style=\"font-family: 'Calibri',sans-serif;color: #333333\">What are the responsibilities of University staff with regards to transgender students?<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"background: white;margin: 0cm 0cm 18.0pt 0cm\"><span style=\"color: #333333\">It is the responsibility of staff to respect the dignity of all students and challenge or report any incident of discrimination, bullying or harassment relating to gender identity. It is also essential that they do not share information about an individual\u2019s trans status with any other person unless given explicit permission by the individual, and comply with the law that is in force in Great Britain and Northern Ireland in relation to the protected characteristic of gender reassignment. <\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"background: white;margin: 0cm 0cm 18.0pt 0cm\"><strong><span style=\"font-family: 'Calibri',sans-serif;color: #333333\">How do we support those transitioning while at university?<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"background: white;margin: 0cm 0cm 18.0pt 0cm\"><span style=\"color: #333333\">The University\u2019s\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"color: black\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.kent.ac.uk\/studentservices\/files\/Trans%20Student%20Support%20Policy%2020%20Feb%202018.pdf\"><span style=\"color: #05345c\">Trans Student Support Policy<\/span><\/a><\/span><span style=\"color: #333333\">\u00a0provides guidance to trans students on how to inform the university about their transition and\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"color: black\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.kent.ac.uk\/guides\/using-kentvision#details\"><span style=\"color: #05345c\">how to change their name\/gender marker on University records<\/span><\/a><\/span><span style=\"color: #333333\">, as well as providing specific information for international students, and information on managing identity change (e.g. updating their Kent ID card, KentVision, NUS card). The policy has an Action Plan for supporting students during transition, and students can have a member of staff as a named \u2018Primary Contact\u2019 to support them through this. The University policy also provides guidance to staff on aspects such as appropriate language, and provides information for trans students about support groups, confidentiality, toilet and changing facilities, bullying, harassment and discrimination, careers advice and advice on placements\/year in industry\/study abroad.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"background: white;margin: 0cm 0cm 18.0pt 0cm\"><span style=\"color: black\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.kent.ac.uk\/equality-diversity-inclusivity\/student-edi\/support-for-trans-individuals\"><span style=\"color: #05345c\">TG Pals<\/span><\/a><\/span><span style=\"color: #333333\">\u00a0is a free, confidential peer-support group. The group meets in Canterbury on the 2<sup>nd<\/sup>\u00a0and 4<sup>th<\/sup>\u00a0Wednesday of the month (evenings, term time only).\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"color: black\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.kent.ac.uk\/student-support\"><span style=\"color: #05345c\">Student Support and Wellbeing<\/span><\/a><\/span><span style=\"color: #333333\">\u00a0can provide wellbeing support.\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"color: black\"><a href=\"https:\/\/reportandsupport.kent.ac.uk\/\"><span style=\"color: #05345c\">Report + Support<\/span><\/a><\/span><span style=\"color: #333333\">\u00a0is a way for any student to report incidents of bullying, assault, harassment, sexual assault and hate incidents. <\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"background: white;margin: 0cm 0cm 18.0pt 0cm\"><strong><span style=\"font-family: 'Calibri',sans-serif;color: #333333\">What can a member of the trans community do if they need advice or help?<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"background: white;margin: 0cm 0cm 18.0pt 0cm\"><span style=\"color: #333333\">As well as the support available at the University already mentioned, there are LGBT+ Student Societies\/<a href=\"https:\/\/kentunion.co.uk\/networks\/lgbtq\">Networks<\/a> at\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"color: black\"><a href=\"https:\/\/kentunion.co.uk\/activities\"><span style=\"color: #05345c\">Canterbury<\/span><\/a><\/span><span style=\"color: #333333\">\u00a0and\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"color: black\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.thehubmedway.co.uk\/groups\/societies\/\"><span style=\"color: #05345c\">Medway<\/span><\/a><\/span><span style=\"color: #333333\">, and for trans staff, there is the <\/span><span style=\"color: black\"><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/lgbtstaff\/\">LGBTQ+ Staff Network<\/a><\/span><span style=\"color: #333333\">. Outside of university, there are a number of organisations that can provide help and advice to trans people, such as\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"color: black\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youngminds.org.uk\/young-person\/coping-with-life\/gender-and-mental-health\"><span style=\"color: #05345c\">Young Minds<\/span><\/a><\/span><span style=\"color: #333333\">\u00a0(gender and mental health),\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.transactual.org.uk\/\"><span style=\"color: #05345c\">TransActual<\/span><\/a>,\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"color: black\"><a href=\"https:\/\/mermaidsuk.org.uk\/mermaids-student-space\/\"><span style=\"color: #05345c\">Mermaids Student Space<\/span><\/a><\/span><span style=\"color: #333333\">\u00a0(for students aged 18-25),\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"color: black\"><a href=\"https:\/\/mindout.org.uk\/\"><span style=\"color: #05345c\">Mind Out<\/span><\/a><\/span><span style=\"color: #333333\">\u00a0(LGBTQ+ mental health service), and\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"color: black\"><a href=\"https:\/\/switchboard.lgbt\/\"><span style=\"color: #05345c\">Switchboard<\/span><\/a><\/span><span style=\"color: #333333\">\u00a0(LGBT+ helpline). There is more information and further resources on the <\/span><span style=\"color: black\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.kent.ac.uk\/equality-diversity-inclusivity\/protected-characteristics\/gender-reassignment\">Student EDI webpage<\/a><\/span><span style=\"color: #333333\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"background: white;margin: 0cm 0cm 18.0pt 0cm\"><strong><span style=\"font-family: 'Calibri',sans-serif;color: #333333\">What advice would you give to students about being respectful to the trans community?<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"background: white;margin: 0cm 0cm 18pt;text-align: left\"><span style=\"color: #333333\">Use\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"color: black\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.mypronouns.org\/inclusivelanguage\"><span style=\"color: #05345c\">gender-inclusive language<\/span><\/a><\/span><span style=\"color: #333333\"> and respect personal pronouns. \u00a0Use the name and pronouns that someone has asked you to use.
