{"id":14317,"date":"2021-03-24T13:30:02","date_gmt":"2021-03-24T13:30:02","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/kent-business-matters\/?p=5180"},"modified":"2022-05-20T21:33:32","modified_gmt":"2022-05-20T20:33:32","slug":"our-diversity-in-leadership-guest-lecture-series-a-success","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/kbs-news-events\/2021\/03\/our-diversity-in-leadership-guest-lecture-series-a-success\/","title":{"rendered":"Our Diversity in Leadership MBA Guest Lecture Series: A Success"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>On Friday 18 March, we hosted our first quarterly MBA Guest Lecture Series event on the topic of \u2018Diversity in Leadership\u2019.<\/p>\n<p>The event welcomed a global audience of over 60 guests, a mix of MBA Students, Alumni and business owners.<\/p>\n<p>In celebration of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.internationalwomensday.com\/\">International Women\u2019s Day<\/a> on March 2, our Women in Leadership Scholars currently studying our <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kent.ac.uk\/kent-business-school\/mba\">MBA<\/a> organised an interactive and inspiring event.<\/p>\n<p>We welcomed Pia Roenhoej and Deborah Turner to the screen; two successful and inspiring women from diverse areas of business to share with us the positives, the challenges and the inspirations of being a woman in leadership.<\/p>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: center\"><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/kent-business-matters\/files\/2021\/02\/pia-copy.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-5046\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/kent-business-matters\/files\/2021\/02\/pia-copy.jpg\" alt=\"Pia \" width=\"750\" height=\"493\" \/><\/a><\/strong><\/h3>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: center\"><strong>Pia Roenhoej, Country Manager, IBM Technology Support Services Denmark (TSS)<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Pia has a 32-year long career in IBM and shared with us her personal and professional experience of \u2018shattering the glass ceiling\u2019 of the tech industry.<\/p>\n<p>Pia emphasised that communication is key throughout work and life. She said: <em>\u201cBe clear on what is important to<\/em><em> you<\/em><em>. Clarify with the people around you what your priorities are &#8211; be vocal, clear and close to them<\/em><em>.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Pia leads a busy life as a senior woman in tech, a mother and the founder and driving force of a housing association for young adults with multiple disabilities.<\/p>\n<p>Pia shared the six characteristics she feels strongly are behind a person thriving to achieve: Integrity, Responsibility, Care, Determination, Authenticity and Priorities.<\/p>\n<p>After a free-flowing Q&amp;A, we invited our second speaker Deborah to the screen.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/kent-business-matters\/files\/2021\/02\/debs-resized-.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-5035\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/kent-business-matters\/files\/2021\/02\/debs-resized-.jpg\" alt=\"deborah Turner \" width=\"750\" height=\"493\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<h3><strong>Deborah Turner, Deborah Turner Ltd<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Running two very different companies and actively championing women in business, Deborah shared with us the importance of mentoring and supporting woman. Having worked in a male-dominated environment for many years, Deborah is fully aware of the challenges that women wishing to succeed can face in the workplace.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Increasing the visibility of role models<\/strong> is something Deborah is passionate about and will be driving the agenda for at the Federation of Small Businesses (FSB) where she is \u2018Champion for Women&#8217; in Business.<\/p>\n<p>Deborah said: <em>\u201cBeing a female leader gives you a voice. It&#8217;s important we use that voice for good.&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em><b>We thank our speakers and attendees for joining us, and all of you that stayed on to network.
