{"id":14270,"date":"2020-03-12T13:50:47","date_gmt":"2020-03-12T13:50:47","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/kent-business-matters\/?p=4421"},"modified":"2023-03-30T09:16:42","modified_gmt":"2023-03-30T08:16:42","slug":"bsuj-students-set-to-pitch-to-expert-panel","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/kbs-news-events\/2020\/03\/bsuj-students-set-to-pitch-to-expert-panel\/","title":{"rendered":"BSUJ Students Set to Pitch to Expert Panel"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"lead\">Students from across the University of Kent will be competing in this year\u2019s Business Start-Up Journey (BSUJ) pitching finals and showcase.<\/p>\n<p>The annual event hosted by the University\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kent.ac.uk\/kent-business-school\/facilities\/aspire\">ASPIRE<\/a> (Accelerator Space for Innovation and Responsible Enterprise) brings together students to pitch their business ideas to a panel of judges. They can <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/kent-business-matters\/2019\/03\/28\/business-start-up-journey-2019-winner-announced\/\">win \u00a31,000<\/a> to help start or develop their business as well as other prizes and access to investment funds.<\/p>\n<p>Competing this year are students from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kent.ac.uk\/kent-business-school\">Kent Business School<\/a>, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kent.ac.uk\/arts\">School of Arts<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kent.ac.uk\/european-culture-languages\/philosophy\">Philosophy<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kent.ac.uk\/politics-international-relations\">Politics and International Relations<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kent.ac.uk\/courses\/undergraduate\/255\/biology\">Biology<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kent.ac.uk\/sport-sciences\">Sports<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cs.kent.ac.uk\/\">Computing<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>They will pitch to judges in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kent.ac.uk\/hospitality\/virtual-tours\/student\/?\/canterbury\/facilities\/kent-business-school\">Sibson Lecture Theatre 2<\/a> on Wednesday 25 March. Ideas and businesses range from AR in education, a documentary film, a protein drink, an app for creating successful dates, stock control innovation for small business and a mobile barbers!<\/p>\n<p>This years panel of judges include<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Daniel Rubin, Founder and Chairman of international footwear brand <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dunelondon.com\/?gclid=Cj0KCQiAhojzBRC3ARIsAGtNtHXMdtfkOVHgFwdX8nIkk1s0qEFV2OuKXROO1_o9EoOFQTzO6Lb2higaAqhWEALw_wcB\">Dune London<\/a><\/li>\n<li>Laura Bounds, Managing Director of <a href=\"https:\/\/kentcrisps.com\/\">Kent Crisps<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/kentishcondiments.com\/\">Kentish Condiments<\/a> (CHECK)<\/li>\n<li>Dean Johnson, Managing Director of medi-tech firm <a href=\"https:\/\/www.haag-streit.com\/haag-streit-uk\/?gclid=Cj0KCQiAhojzBRC3ARIsAGtNtHVPVeJ_A4eRuR3-zLvJ3hqZViGa_1te_DH7HpLaPuWrQvxBV1-pSv4aAnScEALw_wcB\">Haag Streit UK<\/a><\/li>\n<li>Emmanuel Enemokwu, Founder of the streetwear business, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.jehu-cal.com\/\">Jehu-cal<\/a>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Emay started his business while a student at the university. He graduated in summer after taking part in the <a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/PY9YB-T6ltE\">BSUJ<\/a> and undertaking a <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/kent-business-matters\/2019\/08\/16\/meet-the-selfies-2019\/\">Self-Employed Placement year<\/a>. He is now successfully running his business full time.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/kent-business-matters\/files\/2020\/03\/34866680972_7400edcbd8_o.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\" wp-image-4422 aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/kent-business-matters\/files\/2020\/03\/34866680972_7400edcbd8_o-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"734\" height=\"489\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Many of the students taking part in the contest have been following the BSUJ, a 15-week co-curricular programme run through the University\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kent.ac.uk\/studyplus\/courses\/index.html\">Study Plus<\/a> activities.<\/p>\n<p>Based in ASPIRE, the BSUJ combines interactive workshops and one-to-one advice sessions. It offers students the chance to explore the process of starting a business as well as develop entrepreneurial skills which enhance their employability.<\/p>\n<p>With activities based on both <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kent.ac.uk\/hospitality\/virtual-tours\/student\/?\/medway\/academic-facilities\/medway-kent-business-school\">Medway<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kent.ac.uk\/hospitality\/virtual-tours\/student\/?\/canterbury\/facilities\/kent-business-school\">Canterbury<\/a> campuses, the BSUJ is available to students at all levels of study from any degree course. It is supported through philanthropic donations from sources including <a href=\"https:\/\/www.santander.co.uk\/universities\">Santander Universities<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><u><a href=\"https:\/\/www.kent.ac.uk\/studyplus\/courses\/index.html\">Study Plus<\/a><\/u> is open to all students studying degree programmes at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kent.ac.uk\/\">Kent<\/a>.
