In the meantime, read our top 5 reasons why you should be a Student Blogger:

1. Develop a Positive Digital Footprint

When you submit your CV to a potential employer, it’s always good to include your blog address at the top of the first page as a contact detail. Your blog posts form an online portfolio, which you can present to an organisation before you reach the interview stages. This helps you stand out from the crowd and speaks a thousand times louder than a standard two-page CV ever will. Post written content which delves into industry hot topics and theories, or demonstrates your practical experiences. Your blog can also link to your social media channels – including LinkedIn, which can be critical to you receiving future job offers.

2. Sharpen your Writing Skills

Blogging, especially regular blogging, is a fantastic way to get your writing skills up to scratch. For some, writing can be a daunting task, but working on it in a less formal setting can take the pressure off. It’s about making writing a habit, learning how to structure a piece of writing to make it more engaging, practicing spelling and grammar, getting to grips with the proofreading process, and publishing and receiving feedback on your writing. With repeated blog posts you can watch your writing skills improve. Especially for someone looking to go into the Marketing industry, developing your copy writing skills is a must.

3. Share your Research and Position yourself as a Thought Leader

You might be studying a topic that you’re really passionate about and you want to showcase your unique angle on it. Have you got a tech angle on in the Pokémon Go craze? What are your thoughts on the impending Brexit? A blog post is the perfect platform to do this.

4. Build a Reputation before you hit the Workplace

Your professional reputation no longer starts once you have found yourself your first job. It starts from the information on the internet people discover. Build your reputation upon the strong foundations of your blog posts. Competition is high among students and so, if you haven’t already, you should be making every effort to build your reputation. In your blog posts, remember what you write should give a positive impression of you. If you’re writing a thought leadership piece feature references from industry professionals, let their endorsements give you credibility. Show off your knowledge of the industry by providing insights and advice.

5. Network with Industry Individuals

Review or respond to the views of someone high-up in industry. Write a review of their books, write a reactionary blog post to something they have written or simply mention them in a blog post. What are your thoughts on that latest study by that business expert? Could you respond to a statement made by a business leader?

You could be surprised, the author might get in touch with you to thank you, or even better respond to your blog post online. You could even receive a job offer! Even if you don’t get anything out of it directly, it’s all about starting conversations, and positioning yourself alongside people high-up and well-respected within the world of business.

If you’d like to get involved in writing for the Kent Business School Blog; Kent Business Matters email kbsbloggers@kent.ac.uk to express your interest.
