{"id":10634,"date":"2021-03-27T12:28:33","date_gmt":"2021-03-27T12:28:33","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/kbs-news-events\/?p=10634"},"modified":"2022-03-09T14:29:55","modified_gmt":"2022-03-09T14:29:55","slug":"how-can-we-plug-kents-sme-digital-skills-gap","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/kbs-news-events\/2021\/03\/how-can-we-plug-kents-sme-digital-skills-gap\/","title":{"rendered":"How Can We Plug Kent\u2019s SME Digital Skills Gap?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">A<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\"> report published this week from <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/learningandwork.org.uk\/\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">Learning &amp; Work Institute<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"none\"> highlighted that there is a worrying, and growing, UK\u2019s digital skills gap<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">. <\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">Their<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\"> findings<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\"> were summarised in a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/business-56479304\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">BBC\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">news\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">article<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0which hig<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">h<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">lights the evidence of a skills shortfall in digital<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0technologies<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">The findings demonstrate a systemic failure<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\"> to promote and deliver IT skills within education, from schools and universities to in-business training.<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0The conditions brought about by the Covid-19 pandemic have <\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">further exacerbated these needs,\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">caus<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">ing<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\"> a step-change in the use of digital in our private and professional lives.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">The relationship between technology and skills is complex. With each wave of technology, concerns are raised about the existence of skills-biased technological change, resulting in increased skills obsolescence and ultimately high levels of unemployment<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0until the skills become embedded at all levels of the curriculum<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: center\"><strong>Pilot study<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">At\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/research.kent.ac.uk\/productivity-workplace-performance\/\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">Kent Business School<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, myself, Dr Catherine Robinson and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kent.ac.uk\/economics\/people\/2263\/siegel-christian\">Christian Siegel<\/a> <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">(<a href=\"https:\/\/www.kent.ac.uk\/economics\">School of Economics)<\/a>\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">have recently undertaken a pilot survey of SMEs in Kent to understand their use of\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Big Data,\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">AI and robotic technologies specifically<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0aim\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">of this project, supported by the\u00a0<\/span>Office for National Statistics, <span data-contrast=\"auto\">is to explore the<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0associated skill complementarities\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">with technology\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">and\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">the shortages or gaps e<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">xperienced by Kent&#8217;s SMEs<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">. We are also looking at the <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">extent <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">to which they are investing in<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> training.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">In our pilot study finalised recently, w<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">e discovered that over 70 per cent of<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">SMEs in the survey sample made technological improvements <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">and<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> upgrades <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">in the past three years. Around 50 per cent have adopted new production or distribution methods.\u00a0 Artificial Intelligence is being used directly in under 10 per cent of <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">those surveyed<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> but with a further 22 per cent looking to use it in the future.\u00a0 <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Out of these, the majority reported to support employees through complementary training and education, and\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">a third of all surveyed SMEs reported difficulty in attracting the right people to their jobs.\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">All of our statistics\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">p<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">oint to a skills gap<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0faced by Kent\u2019s SMEs.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Interestingly, <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">the surveyed SMEs on average expect wages to increase when new technologies are introduced and th<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">e majority of\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">surveyed<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> SMEs were unsure of how <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">AI or Robotics\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">would impact their<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0future management and business activities<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, which perhaps indicates both an uncertainty and lack of confidence in investing and engaging with new technologies<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u202f<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: center\"><strong>&#8216;Business focused digital portfolio&#8217;<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">Higher education providers are<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0beginning to address th<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">e skills\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">gap, with a growth in\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">business focused <\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">digital\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">portfolio of\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">programmes such as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kent.ac.uk\/courses\/postgraduate\/1232\/digital-marketing-and-analytics\">Digital Marketing Analytics<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kent.ac.uk\/courses\/postgraduate\/3817\/financial-technology\">Financial Technology<\/a><\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">While higher education will certainly help improve things,<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\"> more basic digital literacy seems to be the most necessary for<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0the bulk of businesses to reap the rewards from this latest technological wave.\u00a0 <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">Improved employer-education links could facilitate this and indeed the dialogue between Universities and SMEs is likely to improve with the <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/kbs-news-events\/2021\/03\/kbs-announced-as-rishi-sunaks-help-to-grow-partner-school\/\">Help to Grow (Digital and Management) <\/a>programme<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">s<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\"> as well as through the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kent.ac.uk\/digital-lifelong-learning\/apprenticeships\">Higher and Degree Apprenticeships<\/a>.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"TextRun SCXW50778301 BCX8\" lang=\"EN-GB\" xml:lang=\"EN-GB\" data-contrast=\"none\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW50778301 BCX8\">Both of these schemes require SMEs to directly i<\/span><\/span><span class=\"TextRun SCXW50778301 BCX8\" lang=\"EN-GB\" xml:lang=\"EN-GB\" data-contrast=\"none\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW50778301 BCX8\">nvest in skills of their staff in this way and prepare them for\u00a0 tomorrow\u2019s world.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.kent.ac.uk\/kent-business-school\/people\/2468\/www.kent.ac.uk\/kent-business-school\/people\/2468\/robinson-catherine\">Dr Catherine Robinson<\/a> is Deputy Dean of KBS and the director of <a href=\"https:\/\/research.kent.ac.uk\/productivity-workplace-performance\/\">Productivity and Workplace Performance<\/a> at KBS.
