Launched in 1994, Gender, Work & Organization was the first journal to provide an arena dedicated to debate and analysis of gender relations, the organisation of gender and the gendering of organisations. The Gender, Work & Organization conference provides an international forum for debate and analysis of contemporary debates affecting gender studies.
It is with a heavy heart that we post this message but unfortunately events have overtaken us. Due to the Covid-19 outbreak and following University of Kent and UK government advice we have to cancel the GWO 2020 conference this year. We are so sorry to have to do this but the world has changed overnight with an enormous impact on events such as the conference and life in general.
On the positive side, we are moving the conference into 2021 and the new dates for GWO 2021 are Wednesday 30th June 2021 to Friday 2nd July 2021. Our intention is to maintain the same conference theme and we would also like to keep the existing streams. However, we do recognize that as the conference will be taking place a year late, convenors may want to redevelop their streams and individual authors may want to submit their papers for publication in this intervening year. We have emailed all convenors about running their stream as part of GWO 2021 and they will be in contact with everyone who has had a paper accepted for GWO 2020 to ascertain if individuals want to present their paper in the conference next year. Additionally, we will also put out a new call for stream proposals towards the end of the summer to allow new proposals to be submitted as well as providing existing convenors with the opportunity to redevelop their stream if they wish to do so.
Finally, we can confirm that the costs will remain the same so there will be no increase in conference charges. For those who have already registered, we can maintain this booking for the GWO 2021 conference next year. Alternatively, those who would like to request a refund should contact Louisa Harvey in the University of Kent Conference Office at L.M.Harvey@kent.ac.uk
As per the terms of the conference booking, a refund of payments made minus a £50 administration fee will be provided. Requests for refunds can be made up to just over two weeks before the rescheduled conference i.e. by Friday 11th June 2021.
Thank you so much to everyone who has contributed to the conference. We are hugely appreciative of the support you have given the conference so far – we could not have put together such a fascinating programme without your input. We hope to be able to do justice to your energy and commitment when we run the conference next year and we look forward to working with everyone to put on an event which celebrates the work of our research community. Take care everyone and look forward to seeing you in June 2021.
Patricia Lewis & Ruth Simpson, GWO 2020 Conference Organizers
The 11th Biennial International Interdisciplinary Conference will be held at Kent Business School on 24-26 June 2020. The conference is organised by the University of Kent’s Professor Patricia Lewis and Professor Ruth Simpson of Brunel University London.
The 2016 conference hosted at Keele University, UK and the 2018 conference in Sydney, Australia hosted by Macquarie University, attracted up to 400 international scholars from over 30 nations.
The conference is organised primarily as a series of streams, stream proposals that address the central theme of ‘Transforming Contexts, Transforming Selves: Gender in New Times’ are particularly welcome. Expressions of interest for the role of stream convenor at the conference and proposals for stream topics are now being invited.
Timeline for abstracts:
- Stream convenors circulate their stream call for abstracts. Deadline for submission of abstracts to stream convenor, Friday 15 November 2019
- Stream convenor decision on acceptance of abstract communicated to author by Monday 2 December 2019
- Find out more about abstract submission and the extended deadline here GWO 2020 Abstract Submission Deadline Extension
In addition to the specialist streams running as part of GWO 2020 Conference at Kent, we will also be running an open stream. This is for submissions which explore issues related to the overall theme of the conference “Transforming Contexts, Transforming Selves: Gender in New Times” but which do not have an exact fit with the streams which have a particular research focus. Call for abstracts can be found here. Please submit an abstract to your chosen stream by emailing it to the relevant stream convenors. The list of streams available can be found here
