The Gender, Work & Organization conference provides an international forum for debate and analysis of contemporary debates affecting gender studies.

*COVID-19 UPDATE*

Updated 18/03/2020

It is with a heavy heart that we post this message but unfortunately events have overtaken us.  Due to the Covid-19 outbreak and following University of Kent and UK government advice we have to cancel the GWO 2020 conference this year.  We are so sorry to have to do this but the world has changed overnight with an enormous impact on events such as the conference and life in general.

On the positive side, we are moving the conference into 2021 and the new dates for GWO 2021 are Wednesday 30th June 2021 to Friday 2nd July 2021.  Our intention is to maintain the same conference theme and we would also like to keep the existing streams.  However, we do recognize that as the conference will be taking place a year late, convenors may want to redevelop their streams and individual authors may want to submit their papers for publication in this intervening year.  We have emailed all convenors about running their stream as part of GWO 2021 and they will be in contact with everyone who has had a paper accepted for GWO 2020 to ascertain if individuals want to present their paper in the conference next year.  Additionally, we will also put out a new call for stream proposals towards the end of the summer to allow new proposals to be submitted as well as providing existing convenors with the opportunity to redevelop their stream if they wish to do so.

Finally, we can confirm that the costs will remain the same so there will be no increase in conference charges.  For those who have already registered, we can maintain this booking for the GWO 2021 conference next year. Alternatively, those who would like to request a refund should contact Louisa Harvey in the University of Kent Conference Office at L.M.Harvey@kent.ac.uk

As per the terms of the conference booking, a refund of payments made minus a £50 administration fee will be provided.  Requests for refunds can be made up to just over two weeks before the rescheduled conference i.e. by  Friday 11th June 2021.

Thank you so much to everyone who has contributed to the conference.  We are hugely appreciative of the support you have given the conference so far – we could not have put together such a fascinating programme without your input.  We hope to be able to do justice to your energy and commitment when we run the conference next year and we look forward to working with everyone to put on an event which celebrates the work of our research community.  Take care everyone and look forward to seeing you in June 2021.

Best wishes

Patricia Lewis & Ruth Simpson, GWO 2020 Conference Organizers

The 11th Biennial International Interdisciplinary Conference will be held at Kent Business School on 24-26 June 2020. The conference is organised by the University of Kent’s Professor Patricia Lewis and Professor Ruth Simpson of Brunel University London.

The 2016 conference hosted at Keele University, UK and the 2018 conference in Sydney, Australia hosted by Macquarie University, attracted up to 400 international scholars from over 30 nations.

The conference is organised primarily as a series of streams, stream proposals that address the central theme of ‘Transforming Contexts, Transforming Selves: Gender in New Times’ are particularly welcome. Expressions of interest for the role of stream convenor at the conference and proposals for stream topics are now being invited.

Timeline for abstracts:

  • Stream convenors circulate their stream call for abstracts. Deadline for submission of abstracts to stream convenor, Friday 15 November 2019
  • Stream convenor decision on acceptance of abstract communicated to author by Monday 2 December 2019
  • Find out more about abstract submission and the extended deadline here GWO 2020 Abstract Submission Deadline Extension

Open stream

In addition to the specialist streams running as part of GWO 2020 Conference at Kent, we will also be running an open stream.  This is for submissions which explore issues related to the overall theme of the conference “Transforming Contexts, Transforming Selves: Gender in New Times” but which do not have an exact fit with the streams which have a particular research focus. Call for abstracts can be found here. Please submit an abstract to your chosen stream by emailing it to the relevant stream convenors. The list of streams available can be found here

    1. Hello Zeinab,

Thank you for your interest in the conference. To upload your abstract you need to choose one of the streams that will be running at the conference and submit your abstract directly to the convenors of your chosen stream. Details of all the streams, the convenors and details of how to submit and where to submit is available in the conference streams information document which can be found at the top of the web page. Alternatively, you can look at our Twitter and Facebook for details of the streams – links to GWO 2020 Twitter and Facebook can be found above on this web page. Finally, you can also find the information about the streams on the journal web page.

Decisions about acceptance should have been communicated to you by the stream convenors of the stream to which you submitted your abstract. If you have not yet had a response from the stream, please contact the convenors.

  5. Hello,

May I ask if the colleagues whose abstracts are accepted need to pay a fee for conference as well?

    Best wishes,

    1. Hi Deniz

To present a paper at the GWO 2020 conference based on an accepted abstract, all delegates must pay to attend. We are planning to have a small number of PhD scholarships for registered PhD students.

  6. Hello!
My abstract has been selected for the conference. I want to know if there are any travel grants that could facilitate attendance at the conference.

    Thanks.

  7. I wonder, when do you announce the conference fee and the information what does it include, since we need to apply a travel grant from our university now in the beginning of the year. Further, there is a need to know the time-schedule of the conference in order to organize travelling from abroad (also a need to apply a travel grant), whether to travel on the day before and after the conference, or on the same day.

    1. Hello Päivi,

Thank you for your interest in the GWO 2020 conference 24 to 26 June 2020. We look forward to welcoming you to Kent. All the information about the conference and the charges can be found on the journal web page as follows:

      (a) Put Gender, Work and Organization into Google
      (b) Click on the link Gender Work and Organization – Wiley Online
      (c) This takes you to the journal page
      (d) Scroll down to conference charges and click on the link.

Information about the conference can also be found on the GWO 2020 Facebook page and on GWO 2020 Twitter. Links to these can also be found on the journal web page.

The schedule for the conference will not be publicly available for a while so I am unable to provide information about the confirmed schedule at this point in time. If travelling from abroad it may be a good idea to travel on the day before the conference, 23 June 2020. The conference will finish at lunchtime on Friday 26 June 2020.

  8. To whom it may concern.
Hi, I am PhD student, I wonder that when does the registration for attending the conference open? Many thanks in advance!

    1. Hello,

Thanks for your interest in the GWO 2020 Conference. We are aiming to have registration open by the end of January. We will send a tweet out and put a note up on Facebook when this has happened. Keep an eye out!

Look forward to meeting you in June
      Best Wishes

      Patricia

  9. Hello,
My contribution has been accepted. I am a student at the level Master. I would like to know if (when the registration is open) I can pay the same amount than PhD (or even less?) (It’s even harder for me to find funding since I am at the Master level…).
Thanks by advance and See you soon !

    1. Hello,
Thank you for your message. As you have had a paper accepted by a stream for presentation at the conference, we can agree that you can avail of the £400 concessionary rate for the conference. Please note this is an individual response to your request and not conference policy.

Look forward to seeing you in June

      Best Wishes
      Patricia

  10. Thank you very much, that will help me!
I have a second question: am I allowed to apply for one of the five 200£ scholarships (on the website it aims at PhDs) ?
    Thank you in advance.
    Best regards

  11. I wish to contribute to the conference that is now rescheduled for 2021. I am a PhD student from Australia. Kindly let me know how could I access call for papers?
