If you’re preparing for a career in business or the financial markets, these are interesting times. Kent Business School undergraduate and postgraduate students are getting to experience the powerful financial tool Bloomberg Terminal to support their studies and gain a competitive edge.

What is the Bloomberg Terminal?

Bloomberg Terminal is a piece of software that provides financial news and tools to allow the user to make evidence-based financial decisions. The software makes understanding changes in the market much easier. The company was founded by Michael Bloomberg who served as Mayor of New York City. It offers real-time data around the clock and is used internationally in industry to give company credit information, information on currency and exchanges as well as share prices, and so much more.

How can using the Bloomberg Terminal benefit you?

As well as being a great resource for information to use in assignments, Bloomberg is also a really good tool to use in the search for employment. Adding your free Bloomberg email address (example@bloomberg.net) to your CV and LinkedIn profile can signify to employers that you know how to use the Bloomberg Terminal. You can upload your CV to Bloomberg in the hope that employers might approach you, or you can even search for jobs and information about employers can be used for interview preparation.

How can you get started with the Bloomberg Terminal?

Bloomberg itself has an eight-hour self-paced programme which is fantastic for those that are new to the software. Bloomberg Market Concepts (BMC) is a course that provides a visual introduction to the financial markets. BMC consists of 4 modules – Economics, Currencies, Fixed Income and Equities – woven together from Bloomberg data, news, analytics and television. It consists of multiple videos and mini-tests, and if you pass you receive a certificate. You can invoke the test simply by typing BMC at the Bloomberg screen.

You can also use the online resources Bloomberg Terminal Guide and Using Bloomberg for the First Time to get you started.

  1. I never really explored the potential of Bloomberg that fully but it is definitely worth doing if you aspire to work in the financial sector (among others). Excellent to see a purpose-designed Bloomberg suite on campus.
