{"id":26357,"date":"2024-11-14T16:26:35","date_gmt":"2024-11-14T16:26:35","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/isnews\/?p=26357"},"modified":"2024-11-15T12:03:57","modified_gmt":"2024-11-15T12:03:57","slug":"cybersecurity-alert-for-kent-accounts","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/isnews\/cybersecurity-alert-for-kent-accounts\/","title":{"rendered":"Cybersecurity Alert: Phishing Attempts on Kent Accounts"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2>Staff and students urged to stay vigilant over increase in targeted phishing emails designed for ransomware attacks<\/h2>\n<p>We are currently seeing an increase in phishing attempts targeting Kent staff and student email accounts.This type of spam has been associated with <strong>Black Basta<\/strong>, a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bleepingcomputer.com\/news\/security\/black-basta-ransomware-poses-as-it-support-on-microsoft-teams-to-breach-networks\/amp\/\">known ransomware group<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The technique involves spamming your inbox with more than 100 emails, and then contacting you via Teams to \u201chelp resolve the issue\u201d. You will be requested to download and install a remote control app, or allow remote access, which then<strong> infects your computer with ransomware<\/strong> and attempts to spread across the network.<\/p>\n<h3>What you need to do<\/h3>\n<p>If you see high levels of spam in your inbox, please <strong>do not open or respond to them<\/strong>. Report as <strong>Phishing<\/strong> using the <strong>\u201cReport\u201d button<\/strong> in the Outlook toolbar, or you can just delete them.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Do not respond to Teams calls<\/strong> from someone claiming to be from IT Support offering to help with this spam. Before accepting any offer of assistance, please contact IT and Library Support using the details below to verify the caller is actually from IS.<\/p>\n<p>If you have already experienced this and been contacted via Teams to install something, please let us know as soon as possible.
