Sharing pre-print early versions of your publications is an element of Open Research. Find out what pre-prints are, why you might want to use them and what to be aware of.  <\/p>\n<h2><span data-contrast=\"none\">What is a pre-print? <\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">A pre-print is a version of a work that has not been peer reviewed by, or published in, a scholarly journal. It is a preliminary version of an article, shared for comment before formal peer review. <\/span>Many disciplines recognise preprints as part of the publication cycle, and they can be cited in further works.<\/p>\n<h2>Benefits of making your pre-prints available:<\/h2>\n<ul class=\"bullet-list\">\n<li>Ideas and discoveries can be disseminated quickly. Preprints can speed delivery of lifesaving innovations to practitioners across the world or establish priority in a discovery.<\/li>\n<li>Open peer review at this stage can allow you to acknowledge and correct errors before publication.<\/li>\n<li>Potential collaborators can find your research and move it forward more quickly<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>Issues to consider before making your pre-prints available:<\/h2>\n<ul class=\"bullet-list\">\n<li>As with any publication, make sure you are not releasing information too early.\u00a0 Ensure you are not releasing sensitive information.\u00a0 This might be:\n<ul class=\"bullet-list\">\n<li>where\u00a0\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.kent.ac.uk\/guides\/copyright-what-you-need-to-know\/copyright-for-researchers\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">3rd party copyright is included without permission, licence or exception<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul class=\"bullet-list\">\n<li>where research is covered by\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.npsa.gov.uk\/trusted-research-academia\" data-link-type=\"external\">Trusted Research restrictions\u00a0<\/a><\/li>\n<li>material that includes commercial potential<\/li>\n<li>personal or identifying data.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Make sure all your collaborators and stakeholders are happy with an open research approach and the dissemination of pre-prints. Include it in your privacy statements for your research participants.<\/li>\n<li>Balance the risk of dissemination of faulty research against the opportunity to identify and correct errors at an early stage. If the research is found to be faulty, it may reflect negatively on the authors. This is mitigated by the opportunity to correct errors through open peer review before formal publication and ultimately improve the quality of the end result.<\/li>\n<li>Check publishers\u2019 policies. Some publishers may not want to publish works that have been presented as pre-prints.\u00a0 \u00a0Most are happy with the concept but others are not, or have conditions (e.g. using a particular pre-print platform)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>How to share a pre-print<\/h2>\n<p>Preprints should be shared on a dedicated preprint server.\u00a0 This means that they will have DOIs and citable references. Check that the policies and aims of the service indicate that the service is robust and reliable.<\/p>\n<p>Use the <a href=\"https:\/\/doapr.coar-repositories.org\/repositories\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Directory of Open Access Preprint Repositories<\/a> to identify preprints servers.
