{"id":24129,"date":"2023-07-03T11:10:56","date_gmt":"2023-07-03T10:10:56","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/isnews\/?p=24129"},"modified":"2023-07-04T09:19:24","modified_gmt":"2023-07-04T08:19:24","slug":"student-it-accounts-and-multi-factor-authentication-mfa","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/isnews\/student-it-accounts-and-multi-factor-authentication-mfa\/","title":{"rendered":"Student IT accounts and multi-factor authentication (MFA)"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Changes to student accounts: this only affects you if you haven\u2019t accessed and set up a\u00a0multi-factor authentication (MFA)\u00a0method on your Kent IT Account.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>We\u2019re increasing cyber security by making some important changes to how we manage student accounts at the University. Once your student account has been set up, you\u2019ll have <strong>120 days to set up MFA<\/strong>. After that access to your account will be restricted to help keep it secure. You\u2019ll need to contact IT &amp; Library Support to gain access to your account and Kent IT Services.<\/p>\n<p><strong>MFA is required\u00a0<\/strong>to access to email, KentVision and other IT services you log into with your Kent IT Account. MFA significantly reduces the chances of your account being compromised and accessed by cyber-criminals, helping us prevent things like ransomware attacks and data breaches.<\/p>\n<h2>What you need to do<\/h2>\n<p><strong>You must set up MFA on your account as soon as possible if you want to access your Kent email and IT services.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>When you log in to a Kent service, you\u2019ll receive the following prompt:<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/isnews\/files\/2022\/11\/mfa-login-screen-nov22.png\" alt=\"MFA set up screen\" width=\"267\" height=\"312\" \/><\/p>\n<p>You\u2019ll be asked to use an alternative authentication method in addition to your IT Account password.<\/p>\n<p>Follow these steps to set this up when off campus:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Sign out of or close any Microsoft software you may already have open.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>Try to access a Kent service and choose an authentication method when asked:\n<ul>\n<li>we recommend choosing the Microsoft Authenticator app as it\u2019s secure and quick (it allows authentication with one tap rather than a 6-digit code).<\/li>\n<li>if you prefer to use text message or telephone call, choose\u00a0<strong>I want to set up a different method<\/strong>\u00a0and follow the process on-screen.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>The next time you log into a Kent IT service from a new device from off campus \/ outside the Kent network, you\u2019ll receive a notification asking you to authorise the login.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>Access to your IT account already restricted<\/h2>\n<p>If you are unable to access your Kent email or IT services now (and your account already has access restrictions placed on it), you\u2019ll need to contact IT &amp; Library Support.<\/p>\n<h2>MFA at Kent user guide<\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.kent.ac.uk\/guides\/multi-factor-authentication-mfa\">Essential guide to MFA at Kent<\/a><\/p>\n<h2>Help and support<\/h2>\n<p>If you have any questions, please contact IT &amp; Library Support.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>01227 82 4888<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"mailto:helpdesk@kent.ac.uk\">helpdesk@kent.ac.uk<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Changes to student accounts: this only affects you if you haven\u2019t accessed and set up a\u00a0multi-factor authentication (MFA)\u00a0method on your Kent IT Account.
