As recently reported in the press, there\u2019s been a sharp rise in attacks towards public sector\/education sector organisations. These attacks have been intense and disruptive.<\/p>\n<p>As the Information Services department, we&#8217;re responsible for making sure University IT services are as secure as they can be. We&#8217;re planning a programme of work and you will see changes in the coming months to the way services are secured. We also need your help to combat these threats.<\/p>\n<h2>Changing how you log into services<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>In April all staff were required to set up <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kent.ac.uk\/guides\/multi-factor-authentication-mfa\">Multi Factor Authentication (MFA)<\/a> to access Microsoft 365 services from off campus. This will be followed by similar changes to the way VPN works.<\/li>\n<li>Student accounts will be moved onto MFA after the end of the examination period.<\/li>\n<li>Similar access changes are coming later in the year to Moodle (and Turnitin), KentVision, Staff Connect, LibrarySearch and more.<\/li>\n<li>In May, all emails sent to Kent addresses from outside the University will feature a <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/isnews\/warnings-on-all-external-emails\/\">warning message at the top<\/a>, to remind you that it could be fraudulent.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Changes are being carefully planned and widely communicated. Our support staff are on hand to make sure everyone is well supported throughout.<\/p>\n<h2>We need your help<\/h2>\n<p>Please read our advice so you are armed with the knowledge to operate safely and with caution when online.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Read and follow our\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.kent.ac.uk\/guides\/protect-your-devices\">Protect your devices guide\u00a0<\/a><\/li>\n<li>Stay alert for very convincing fraudulent email: read our updated <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kent.ac.uk\/guides\/email-safety\">Email safety guide<\/a><\/li>\n<li>Staff: read and follow our <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kent.ac.uk\/guides\/staff-online-data-security\">Online data security guide for all staff<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>Why this matters<\/h2>\n<p>We can&#8217;t guarantee that our systems won\u2019t be compromised and that we won\u2019t experience <strong>considerable disruption<\/strong>.
