What to do with your library books

Stack of 3 books on table

While the Templeman Library remains closed due to COVID-19, we want to share advice with you for what to do with your library books, depending on your situation.

Returning to Kent in September

If you’re coming back to Kent next academic year, we recommend you hold onto your books. You won’t have to return them until at least 28 September.

If you’re finishing your undergraduate degree, have a confirmed postgraduate place at Kent for September and want to hold onto your books until you return, please contact us.

Books left in campus accommodation

If you have left books in your Canterbury campus accommodation, please email libraryhelp@kent.ac.uk with your details and the room address and we’ll arrange to retrieve them.

Final year student or not returning in September

If you’re a final year student or want to return your books now for another reason, you have several options:

  1. If you live on the Canterbury campus, live locally, or have arranged to collect your belongings from campus, please use the book drop at the Library Road Entrance.
  2. Posting books: depending on weight and volume, you could consider breaking up a large parcel into smaller ones. Courier services (like Parcel Monkey or Hermes) might be cheaper than Royal Mail and pick up the parcel from you. Whatever method you use, please make sure you get a receipt.
Our postal address is: Templeman Library, University of Kent, Canterbury, Kent, CT2 7NU
  3. If you’re unable to return your books by any of these methods, please get in touch with us and we’ll work out a solution with you.

When you’ve returned a book, it may still show on your library account for another week (or longer if you’ve posted it). This is due to our current staffing levels. Please bear with us, but do get in touch if you’re concerned that a book is still showing after more than a week.

  1. I am leaving the university 31 August. My books show a return date end September. Is this still accurate?

  2. Hi Angela I am a PhD Sconul card holder. I have books to return but also may need to renew my card to borrow more books. My own University has still not been able to issue new ID cards. It is in Exeter so I cannot access printed books there only eBooks and have no access to your eBooks as a Sconul holder. Any advice please? I live in Dover.

    1. Hi Pauline, many thanks for your query. I don’t know the answer to this, so I will pass this on to my library colleagues and they will get back to you. You’ll get a confirmation email from our help system. Best wishes, Angela

  3. I left uni this summer and still have Library books outstanding, can I use the book drop to return them during August?

    1. Hi George, if you’re leaving the University we recommend returning them when you can do so safely – by the end of July if possible, but if that causes you any problems then please email us at libraryhelp@kent.ac.uk or phone 01227 824999 and we’ll work out a solution with you.

Your books can’t be reserved by anyone else before August, and we’re still working out what happens after that.

If you’re coming back in September, then please hold on to them for now, unless you want to return them and can conveniently and safely do so.

      Best wishes, Angela
