Update on Read and Publish agreements for 2023

Arrows and the word update

Read and Publish agreements allow the University of Kent corresponding authors to publish Open Access without the need to acquire separate funding. The publishing costs are bundled together with the “read” subscription costs in the fee paid by the library to publishers at the beginning of the calendar year.

These agreements are good value for money and allow us to publish a much higher proportion of Kent articles OA than if we paid for each article charge individually.

As 2023 begins to draw to a close we can review the number of articles that have been published Open Access via these agreements.

From 1st January until 10th October 2023 our Kent corresponding authors have published 185 articles via our Read and Publish agreements. This represents approximately £400,384 which would have been required to make these articles Open Access outside of these agreements. This amount is based upon the average APC price, £2176, that we use for calculations. There are still 2 months remaining for this year, so it is likely that the saving will increase further with the publication of more OA articles before the end of the year.

The details of Read and Publish agreements can be found on our webpages, and our Kent Read and Publish Journal search tool can be used to discover which titles are included in the agreements.

We provide usage statistics for our agreements on our OA Sharepoint site. From here it is possible to see which Divisions have made use of the agreements, and the specific agreements that they have used.
