Next gen Wi-Fi: delivering faster and more reliable connections

Students with laptops

The University has made significant investments in our Wi-Fi service over the last couple of years. The programme has been led by Information Services, with the aim of ensuring fast, reliable Wi-Fi for students, staff and visitors across all our campuses and buildings.

We’ve focussed particularly on teaching, study and social spaces in recent months, and we’re now concentrating our upgrades in accommodation across campus. We’ve recently rolled out Wi-Fi 6, also known as ‘high-efficiency wireless’, which  delivers the most benefit in very densely packed areas where it can handle more connections and more traffic than previous generations of Wi-Fi technology.

Fast reliable Wi-Fi

In the Templeman Library Wi-Fi 6 has help us to deliver a robust, consistent and fast service, even when we have in excess of 2,000 Wi-Fi connected devices running a huge variety of software and apps. We’ve also upgraded Wi-Fi in The Venue, ensuring that even on the busiest of nights everyone gets a fast and reliable connection.

Improving the University’s Wi-Fi is an ongoing process. At the start of 2023 Information Services introduced a new Wi-Fi feature called ‘Fastlane’, which helps ensure video and audio calls are smooth and reliable on the recent models of Apple phones and tablets, even in the busiest environments.

Whether you’re working on your latest assignment, in a Zoom call with your family, or uploading to TikTok, remember good Wi-Fi doesn’t just happen, our dedicated team continue to work to deliver an excellent service.
