Library and IT services – Autumn update 2019

What's new in Information Services?

Welcome back to returning students and hello to any new members of the Kent community! Over the summer we have been busy making improvements to the Templeman Library, Library and IT services.

More places to study

While you have been away we have been busy creating new study spaces in the Templeman Library, Ground Floor, D Block. There are study pods and comfy seating areas plus three techno-booths in the alcoves, each with a student PC for group work.

Want to dock your laptop and use a larger screen, mouse and keyboard? We are trialling docking stations on Floor 2, C Block for those who have a laptop with a USB-C port.

Individual study carrels

Book one of 16 individual study carrels in the Templeman Library for no charge – now available for all students in B Block Floor 1, overlooking the Library Café. Study carrels are lockable study rooms in the Templeman Library for individual study with a desk, chair and lamp. They are available in slots of 1 – 4 hours. Book at isbooking.kent.ac.uk. These are in addition to postgraduate carrels that can be rented on a monthly or quarterly basis. You can also book group study rooms/booths and PCs.

Wi-Fi

Over the summer, Woolf College accommodation has had Wi-Fi re-installed to improve speed, reliability and coverage. All of Ingram Building has also had a Wi-Fi refresh and the Kennedy Building and the Science Hub have now also benefited from full wireless access.

Printing

New white print copy scannersStudent printers have changed over the summer – they have been modernised but work in the same way and offer the same options as before. If you’ve installed a University printer on your own laptop, you may need to re-install it.

LibrarySearch improvements

LibrarySearch logoYou can now access materials from our Special Collections & Archives, the British Cartoon Archive plus the Kent Academic Repository directly through LibrarySearch. We have made it more accessible, and made it easier to request document deliveries and items from Canterbury and Rochester Cathedral. We’ve also improved the overall look and feel, but it all works the same as before.

Kent shortlisted for Outstanding Library Team

We are very proud to be shortlisted in the Times Higher Education (THE) Awards as an Outstanding Library Team!

This award ‘recognises outstanding work in library and information services departments, in particular with regards to collaboration with other administrative and academic departments to enhance the team’s delivery, and the effective use of leading-edge practices from other sectors’.

No Smoking on the Library Terrace

The whole terrace area outside of the Templeman Library is now a no-smoking / vaping area (across from A to D Blocks including the benching areas). This is because smoke has been entering the building and has been reported as unpleasant for library users.

Please note that cash payments are no longer accepted at the Templeman Library Welcome Desk. You can pay by card, KentOne card or contactless payment methods. For some services you can pay online. Cash can still be used at the Print Credit Machine (Block C, Floor 1) and in the Library Café.
