In particular, we demonstrate an\u00a0<strong data-start=\"146\" data-end=\"196\" data-is-only-node=\"\">all-optical ultrafast user localisation method<\/strong>\u00a0for beam-steered optical wireless communication, achieving update rates of\u00a0<strong data-start=\"272\" data-end=\"282\">50 MHz<\/strong>. User position is encoded in optical wavelength and retrieved from the\u00a0<strong data-start=\"354\" data-end=\"391\">time delay between optical pulses<\/strong>, eliminating the need for high-speed electronics or digital signal processing and enabling a\u00a0<strong data-start=\"485\" data-end=\"536\">simple, low-cost, and energy-efficient solution<\/strong>.By combining\u00a0<strong data-start=\"867\" data-end=\"899\">high-speed photonic hardware<\/strong>\u00a0with\u00a0<strong data-start=\"905\" data-end=\"946\">innovative signal processing concepts<\/strong>, the study demonstrates how optical-domain techniques can overcome fundamental bandwidth and latency limitations faced by conventional electronic systems.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1103\" data-end=\"1337\">The results highlight the potential of photonics to enable\u00a0<strong data-start=\"1162\" data-end=\"1231\">real-time, high-throughput measurement and information processing<\/strong>, which is increasingly important for applications where speed, sensitivity, and scalability are critical.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1103\" data-end=\"1337\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-40 aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/ipc\/files\/2025\/10\/OL-paper.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"532\" height=\"302\" \/><\/p>\n<h2 data-start=\"1344\" data-end=\"1364\">Why this matters<\/h2>\n<p data-start=\"1366\" data-end=\"1456\">Ultrafast photonic technologies underpin a wide range of emerging applications, including:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li data-start=\"1460\" data-end=\"1508\">High-speed optical sensing and instrumentation<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"1511\" data-end=\"1552\">Advanced imaging and diagnostic systems<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"1555\" data-end=\"1601\">Microwave photonics and RF signal processing<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"1604\" data-end=\"1659\">Intelligent photonic systems for data-intensive tasks<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p data-start=\"1661\" data-end=\"1838\">By pushing processing and measurement into the optical domain, photonic systems can achieve performance levels that are difficult or impossible to reach using electronics alone.<\/p>\n<h2 data-start=\"1845\" data-end=\"1883\">Connection to our broader research<\/h2>\n<p data-start=\"1885\" data-end=\"1969\">This publication aligns closely with the Photonics Lab\u2019s ongoing research themes in:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li data-start=\"1973\" data-end=\"2029\">Ultrafast optical imaging and time-stretch systems<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"2032\" data-end=\"2088\">Microwave photonics and wideband signal processing<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"2091\" data-end=\"2148\">Optical intelligent computing for sensing and imaging<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p data-start=\"2150\" data-end=\"2332\">It also contributes to our longer-term vision of developing\u00a0<strong data-start=\"2210\" data-end=\"2262\">integrated, application-ready photonic platforms<\/strong>\u00a0for biomedical, industrial, energy, and defence-related applications.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2150\" data-end=\"2332\">\ud83d\udccc\u00a0<em data-start=\"2620\" data-end=\"2814\">If you are interested in collaborating with us, or in PhD and postdoctoral opportunities related to ultrafast photonics and optical signal processing, please get in touch via the [\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/photonics\/contact-us\/\">Contact<\/a> ] page.<\/em><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>We are pleased to share that our latest research paper has been published in\u00a0Optics Letters, a leading journal of the Optica Publishing Group. \ud83d\udd17\u00a0Read the &hellip;
