{"id":251,"date":"2016-10-24T14:03:10","date_gmt":"2016-10-24T13:03:10","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/internationalpartnerships-news\/?p=251"},"modified":"2016-10-24T14:03:10","modified_gmt":"2016-10-24T13:03:10","slug":"kent-student-to-join-european-space-agency","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/internationalpartnerships-news\/2016\/10\/24\/kent-student-to-join-european-space-agency\/","title":{"rendered":"Kent student to join European Space Agency"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A recent graduate from the School of Physical Sciences (SPS) has accepted a position with the European Space Agency&#8217;s (ESA) young graduate trainee programme.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.kent.ac.uk\/physical-sciences\/news\/front-page\/esa-placement.html\"><u><span style=\"color: #0066cc\">Sam Leakey<\/span><\/u><\/a>, who is one of only 80 successful applicants from across Europe, will contribute to on-going research into meteors using a remote observation station in the Canaries. He also hopes to contribute to a range of other projects during his time at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.esa.int\/ESA\"><u><span style=\"color: #0066cc\">ESA<\/span><\/u><\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The one year programme, which is based at the ESA&#8217;s European Space Research and Technology Centre in Noordwijk, Netherlands, is designed to give successful applicants the opportunity to gain experience in the development and operation of space missions.<\/p>\n<p>Mr Leakey, who graduated with a first in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kent.ac.uk\/physical-sciences\/prospective\/undergraduate\/space-science\/index.html\"><u><span style=\"color: #0066cc\">Astronomy, Space Science and Astrophysics MPhys<\/span><\/u><\/a>, went on a year abroad in 2014-15 to our partner institution <a href=\"https:\/\/www.trentu.ca\/\">Trent University<\/a> in Canada.<\/p>\n<p>He said: &#8220;I feel so fortunate to be in this position and I am confident that this opportunity has the potential to lead on to some very exciting things.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-252\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/internationalpartnerships-news\/files\/2016\/10\/spage-agency-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"spage-agency\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/internationalpartnerships-news\/files\/2016\/10\/spage-agency-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/internationalpartnerships-news\/files\/2016\/10\/spage-agency-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/internationalpartnerships-news\/files\/2016\/10\/spage-agency-1024x682.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/internationalpartnerships-news\/files\/2016\/10\/spage-agency.jpg 1843w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A recent graduate from the School of Physical Sciences (SPS) has accepted a position with the European Space Agency&#8217;s (ESA) young graduate trainee programme.
