The aim was to enhance socio-economic development through academic cooperation and the exchange of students and staff. The European Commission has recently released a report on the Erasmus Mundus Action 2 programme, highlighting the main achievements. We are proud that Kent is the third highest participant in the UK, for the number of projects within this framework.

Kent was a full partner in all five editions of the Lotus programme, which linked universities in South East Asia with EU HEIs. The Lotus programme was coordinated by Ghent University, Belgium, and in the case of Lotus+, Uppsala University, Sweden. Kent received a number of outstanding students as part of this project, including Gregorius Wicaksana from Institut Teknologi Bandung, Indonesia. Gregorius was selected to represent the University at the British Conference of Undergraduate Research in April 2013. Gregorius hugely appreciated his experience of studying at Kent; ‘The city, University, and professors were so helpful and encouraging; everything combines to produce the most amazing and conducive environment for learning’.

Looking ahead

A number of bilateral memoranda of understanding have developed as a result of cooperation under the Lotus programme. Kent looks to build on these partnerships, strengthening research, mobility and international cooperation across the world.

The Erasmus Mundus Action 2 programme has now come to a close but activity previously funded by the programme is supported in the other strands of Erasmus+. Kent is actively engaged in Erasmus+ projects that support international cooperation, including International Credit Mobility and Capacity Building projects.
