23 students and staff benefited from Erasmus+ funding under a project managed by the University of Kent, which came to an end in July 2022.
The Erasmus+ Key Action 107 (International Credit Mobility) programme supported short-term placements between countries that were part of the EU’s long-running Erasmus scheme and institutions across the world (differing from Key Action 103 that supports exchange between Erasmus member countries).
Kent was awarded funding for the project in 2019, prior to the UK Government confirming that the UK would no longer continue to be part of the Erasmus+ programme.
The project was granted a year extension due to the Covid-19 pandemic, with students and staff finally being able to travel from 2021/22 academic year.
Despite the challenges caused by the pandemic, the exchange had a significant impact both to those directly involved and the wider university communities with the emerging channels for collaborative research offering considerable potential for years to come.
Amongst those who took part in the Erasmus+ project, students and staff from Kent Law School (KLS) had the opportunity to undertake a placement at Los Andes University in Colombia. Students and staff from Los Andes were able in return to spend time at Kent. Participants organised workshops in a hybrid format, which allowed debate and conversation to flow between Kent and Colombia.
Los Andes plays a central role within the academic community in Colombia and in Latin America as a whole. Its law school, one of the top in the region, shares KLS’ critical, interdisciplinary approach to law and commitment to excellence in research and education. Another strand of the project involved visiting staff and PhD students from Bar Ilan University, Israel. Senior academic staff from Bar Ilan met counterparts at Kent during a visit in June 2022. PhD students from Bar Ilan in Education and Sociology (Gender Studies) also visited and collaboration in these areas is being explored.
