CEWL plays host to Chinese Exchange students

Tai Chi Class

CEWL recently hosted two students, Fang Di and He Xueqi, who are undergraduates studying to teach Chinese to speakers of other languages at Xi’an KeDaGaoXin University China (KDGX).

This was the first time we have hosted exchange students through an exchange programme which was established between CEWL and KDGX this year.

Fang Di and Xueqi observed credit and non-credit bearing Mandarin language classes and led the  speaking and writing workshops to help students to improve their Mandarin language skills. They also attended various English Language and Academic Skills  classes to improve their English and were made welcome by the teachers.

They  worked very hard to design and deliver  the following Chinese language and culture workshops:

  • Chinese Language and Culture Taster Session for Sheldwich Primary School, near Faversham
  • Chinese Music and Tai Chi
  • Calligraphy

All of the sessions were successful and well-received.

Above all, Fang Di and  He Xueqi appreciated the invaluable opportunity to immerse themselves in  British culture and university life, and gained first-hand experience of the culture by talking to and making friends with students at Kent.

Two Kent students –  Jason and Caroline –  who are currently taking our Mandarin modules, will be going to KDGX in Xi’an, China for four weeks during this Easter holidays. We are sure they will enjoy everything KDGX and the historical city Xi’an offer them. We hope to give more of our Mandarin learners the chance to improve their Mandarin language skills and enhance their Graduate Attributes by participating in the exchange programme in the future.

If you have any  questions related to Mandarin language learning at Kent or the Mandarin Exchange Programme, please contact Mrs Ru Su:  R.Su@kent.ac.uk .
