{"id":262,"date":"2021-06-15T12:38:05","date_gmt":"2021-06-15T11:38:05","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/institute-cultural-creative-industries-news\/?p=262"},"modified":"2021-06-15T12:38:05","modified_gmt":"2021-06-15T11:38:05","slug":"a-new-creative-space-on-medways-historic-dockyard-chatham","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/institute-cultural-creative-industries-news\/2021\/06\/15\/a-new-creative-space-on-medways-historic-dockyard-chatham\/","title":{"rendered":"A new creative space on Medway\u2019s Historic Dockyard, Chatham"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"xmsonormal\">On behalf of its partners\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.medway.gov.uk\/\">Medway Council<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/thedockyard.co.uk\/\">Chatham Historic Dockyard Trust<\/a>, the University\u2019s\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.kent.ac.uk\/institute-cultural-creative-industries\">Institute of Cultural and Creative Industries (iCCi)<\/a>\u00a0has announced the development of an innovative new creative space for Medway.<\/p>\n<p class=\"xmsonormal\">With construction planned for 2024, the development will result in the conversion of the Homes England-owned\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/historicengland.org.uk\/listing\/the-list\/list-entry\/1378642\">Police Section House<\/a>\u00a0\u2013\u00a0a Grade II listed Scheduled Ancient Monument at The Historic Dockyard \u2013 into a new 21st Century creative industries\u2019 accelerator space known as The Docking Station. This new development will become a high-quality international creative digital hub that provides cutting edge technologies, performance and training opportunities.<\/p>\n<p class=\"xmsonormal\"><span class=\"xmsocommentreference\">The Docking Station will place creative and cultural industries at the heart of the regeneration plans for the last remaining undeveloped part of the former Dockyard site.<span class=\"xapple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span>Its facilities will include a community caf\u00e9 and social spaces, gallery and exhibition spaces, workshops, flexible teaching areas, a state-of-the-art immersive digital interactive space and start-up\/accelerator zone<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"xmsonormal\">A key project within\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.creativeestuary.com\/\">Creative Estuary<\/a>\u2019s four-year programme to<span class=\"xapple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span>transform 60 miles of the Thames Estuary across Essex and Kent into one of the most exciting cultural hubs in the world, The Docking Station<span class=\"xapple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span>project<span class=\"xapple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span>is supported by<span class=\"xapple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span>Cultural Development Fund investment from the<span class=\"xapple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span>Department for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport.<span class=\"xapple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"xmsonormal\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.kent.ac.uk\/institute-cultural-creative-industries\/catherine-richardson\">Professor Catherine Richardson<\/a>, Director of iCCi, said: \u2018We are very excited to be moving to the next phase of this important project. The imaginative new spaces that the building will offer for working, learning and creating are central to the distinctive kinds of work we do at iCCi, and they will be crucial to our region\u2019s post-Covid economic, social and cultural recovery. Docking Station will give the partners and their communities a beacon building from which to create\u00a0our collective futures.<\/p>\n<p class=\"xmsonormal\">The Docking Station will provide creative businesses and young people from<span class=\"xapple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span>existing and new communities<span class=\"xapple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span>across the region with the co-working and creative spaces they will need in a post-Covid-19 environment; stimulate and inspire collaboration<span class=\"xapple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span>between future generations of digital entrepreneurs and creatives;<span class=\"xapple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span>facilitate greater industry engagement and educational opportunities; and enhance<span class=\"xapple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span>Medway\u2019s strategic repositioning as a Creative City.<span class=\"xapple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"xmsonormal\">The Council, Chatham Historic Dockyard Trust and University see The Docking Station as a key opportunity to support the delivery of Medway\u2019s new Cultural Strategy, which sets out the area\u2019s vision to develop and improve its cultural offer, as well as provide more opportunities for Medway\u2019s residents.
