John Woolrich
John Woolrich has joined our Associate Artists in 2021/22 as Composer in Residence.
His music has been performed throughout the world by leading orchestras and performers including BBC Symphony Orchestra, City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra, Britten Sinfonia and the Academy of St Martin in the Fields; he is also a former Artistic Director of the Dartington International Summer School and guest Artistic Director of the Aldeburgh Festival.
This is an opportunity to bring one of the major figures on the British compositional landscape onto campus, to work with musicians in the University community, and we are celebrating John Woolrich as Associate Artist in a series of events coming up:

Internationally renowned Brodsky Quartet play at the Colyer-Fergusson Hall, with a programme that includes a newly commissioned work by John.

Composer in Focus: John ‘In Conversation,’ looking in particular at his Gesänge der Frühe, an orchestration of Robert Schumann’s last piano composition, performed by the University Symphony Orchestra, and discussing his idea of a constant ‘dialogue with the past.’
