then we will be looking to fully launch within the next month or so, and before the new 2015\/16 academic year begins. \u00a0This will include all of the pre-existing applications from the old system as well, so nothing will be left behind on the old system.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Key improvements include:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><em>Clear and easy to use interface<\/em>\n<ul>\n<li><em>Progress bar as you work on your application<\/em><\/li>\n<li><em>Helper areas on parts of the form<\/em><\/li>\n<li><em>Auto complete areas for adding supervisors and collaborators<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><em>Improved file\/link attachment manager for applications<\/em>\n<ul>\n<li><em>Files up to 5mb in size are now supported<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><em>Improved email notifications for each step of the application process<\/em>\n<ul>\n<li><em>With direct links included for any actions required<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><em>Kent based login and authentication (Single Sign On)<\/em><\/li>\n<li><em>Improved\u00a0statistical data for the Ethics team<\/em><\/li>\n<li><em>Collaborators can now see applications where they are set as collaborator<\/em><\/li>\n<li><em>Applications based on previous applications are now clearly labelled<\/em>\n<ul>\n<li><em>Creating a new application based on an old application gives the option of starting with a copy of the old application.<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><em>Improved user administration features<\/em><\/li>\n<li><em>Declare applications which were created outside of the University<\/em><\/li>\n<li><em>Various security issues and vulnerabilities\u00a0removed<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Once launched, development will not stop at that point &#8211; and that will be the case too with the new Ethics system. \u00a0However,\u00a0the entire project has been developed via a <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Test-driven_development\" target=\"_blank\">Test Driven Development<\/a> process and has been undergoing user testing throughout.<\/p>\n<p>As a precautionary measure &#8211;\u00a0for a few months there will be a notification\u00a0on the home page\u00a0that the system is in Beta, with a link to contact the technical team if any problems do occur. \u00a0 Fixes are generally deploy-able within a matter of minutes of being available and should not disrupt the service.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Technical details<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Generally we shouldn&#8217;t give out too much information about our systems, but we can mention some of the technologies that have been used.<\/p>\n<p>The system itself has been built using the <a href=\"http:\/\/laravel.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Laravel PHP framework<\/a> (with a MySQL database behind it), which was also used to construct the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kent.ac.uk\/psychology\/childdevelopmentunit\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\">Kent Child Development Unit<\/a> (KCDU)\u00a0database replacement launched last year. \u00a0Both the KCDU and Ethics systems share the same low level code base as a result, \u00a0and re-use many of the functions that we have built ourselves. \u00a0Updates and deployments are managed using Capistrano, which helps to reduce on any potential errors when pushing out updates and with minimal disruptions to service.<\/p>\n<p>We have managed to save costs for the School, by ensuring that the system runs on the Web farm infrastructure at the University, which includes regular backups and updates.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>After almost a year since starting development, the new Ethics replacement system is just about\u00a0ready for launch &#8211;
