The hoard <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW72150535 BCX0\">consists of <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW72150535 BCX0\">76<\/span> <\/span><em><span class=\"TextRun SCXW72150535 BCX0\" lang=\"EN-GB\" xml:lang=\"EN-GB\" data-contrast=\"auto\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW72150535 BCX0\">siliqua<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW72150535 BCX0\">e <\/span><\/span><\/em><span class=\"TextRun SCXW72150535 BCX0\" lang=\"EN-GB\" xml:lang=\"EN-GB\" data-contrast=\"auto\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW72150535 BCX0\">and <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW72150535 BCX0\">10<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW72150535 BCX0\"> bronze coins known as <\/span><\/span><em><span class=\"TextRun SCXW72150535 BCX0\" lang=\"EN-GB\" xml:lang=\"EN-GB\" data-contrast=\"auto\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SpellingErrorV2Themed SCXW72150535 BCX0\">nummi<\/span><\/span><\/em><span class=\"TextRun SCXW72150535 BCX0\" lang=\"EN-GB\" xml:lang=\"EN-GB\" data-contrast=\"auto\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW72150535 BCX0\"><em>. <\/em>\u00a0A<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW72150535 BCX0\"> small pottery fragment was also found along with the coins, and it was assumed that the fragment was <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW72150535 BCX0\">probably <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW72150535 BCX0\">from<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW72150535 BCX0\"> the<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW72150535 BCX0\"> container.<\/span> <span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW72150535 BCX0\">The hoard was acquired by the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eastridingmuseums.co.uk\/find-a-museum\/museum\/?entry=treasure_house_museum\">Treasure House Museum<\/a> in Beverley and the team visited the museum in December to examine the find. <\/span><\/span><span class=\"EOP SCXW72150535 BCX0\" data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_259\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-259\" style=\"width: 288px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\" wp-image-259\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/hoards\/files\/2025\/01\/IMG-20250130-WA0012.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"288\" height=\"384\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-259\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The team examining the finds (Photo: \u00a9 James Gerrard).<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span class=\"TextRun SCXW72150535 BCX0\" lang=\"EN-GB\" xml:lang=\"EN-GB\" data-contrast=\"auto\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW72150535 BCX0\">Most of the coins date to the period 355-402 CE, though two of the ten <em>nummi<\/em> were issued at the beginning of the fourth century (306-337 CE). It is not uncommon for earlier coins to be found in the latest hoards and we <\/span><\/span>have a number of similar examples in our dataset.<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"TextRun SCXW56616818 BCX0\" lang=\"EN-GB\" xml:lang=\"EN-GB\" data-contrast=\"auto\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW56616818 BCX0\">Meanwhile, c<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW56616818 BCX0\">lose inspection of the<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW56616818 BCX0\"> pottery<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW56616818 BCX0\"> fragment revealed that the sherd <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW56616818 BCX0\">could not have <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW56616818 BCX0\">b<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW56616818 BCX0\">een part of the hoard container<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW56616818 BCX0\">. Instead, the sherd is <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW56616818 BCX0\">from a kitchen vessel known as a mortarium<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW56616818 BCX0\">, <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW56616818 BCX0\">a <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW56616818 BCX0\">shallow <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW56616818 BCX0\">bowl that was used to <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW56616818 BCX0\">grinding or mixing foodstuffs<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW56616818 BCX0\">.
