Clarke-Neish and reproduced with permission from Dorset Museum and Art Gallery <\/p><p><span class=\"TextRun SCXW93606395 BCX0\" lang=\"EN-GB\" xml:lang=\"EN-GB\" data-contrast=\"auto\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW93606395 BCX0\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW140967164 BCX0\">Ellen and Kelly recently visited\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/span><a style=\"color: #2a6496\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dorsetmuseum.org\/\">Dorset Museum and Art Gallery<\/a><span class=\"TextRun SCXW93606395 BCX0\" lang=\"EN-GB\" xml:lang=\"EN-GB\" data-contrast=\"auto\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW93606395 BCX0\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW140967164 BCX0\"> to study the coins and objects from a late Roman hoard found in Dorchester (Dorset) in 1898. <\/span><\/span><\/span><span class=\"TextRun SCXW93606395 BCX0\" lang=\"EN-GB\" xml:lang=\"EN-GB\" data-contrast=\"auto\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW93606395 BCX0\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW140967164 BCX0\">53 silver coins (<em>siliquae<\/em>) were found alongside two silver spoons and several fragments, though one of the coins has since been lost<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW140967164 BCX0\">. <\/span><\/span><\/span><span class=\"TextRun SCXW142226278 BCX0\" lang=\"EN-GB\" xml:lang=\"EN-GB\" data-contrast=\"auto\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW142226278 BCX0\">\u00a0<span class=\"TextRun SCXW119183713 BCX8\" lang=\"EN-GB\" xml:lang=\"EN-GB\" data-contrast=\"auto\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW119183713 BCX8\">The hoard serves as an excellent example of the <\/span><\/span><a class=\"Hyperlink SCXW119183713 BCX8\" href=\"https:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/hoards\/2024\/01\/19\/decisions-decisions\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><span class=\"TextRun Underlined SCXW119183713 BCX8\" lang=\"EN-GB\" xml:lang=\"EN-GB\" data-contrast=\"none\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW119183713 BCX8\" data-ccp-charstyle=\"Hyperlink\">type of hoards<\/span><\/span><\/a><span class=\"TextRun SCXW119183713 BCX8\" lang=\"EN-GB\" xml:lang=\"EN-GB\" data-contrast=\"auto\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW119183713 BCX8\"> we have chosen to look at during the project.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW142226278 BCX0\">When we arrived at the museum&#8217;s study room, our eyes were immediately<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW142226278 BCX0\">\u00a0drawn to the<\/span> small cardboard\u00a0<span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW142226278 BCX0\">box that the coins are kept in&#8230;<\/span><\/p>\r\n<figure id=\"attachment_119\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-119\" style=\"width: 419px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\" wp-image-119\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/hoards\/files\/2024\/09\/20240911_101909.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"419\" height=\"559\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-119\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Dorchester &#8211; Hoard I Somerleigh Court 1898 cardboard box (Photo: \u00a9 The Trustees of The British Museum. Reproduced with permission from Dorset Museum and Art Gallery.)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\r\n<p><span class=\"TextRun SCXW150408682 BCX8\" lang=\"EN-GB\" xml:lang=\"EN-GB\" data-contrast=\"auto\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW150408682 BCX8\">Aside from two short articles published in the early 1920s, information about the hoard is limited and its contents have not been studied in great detail.<\/span> <span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW150408682 BCX8\">Our key <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW150408682 BCX8\">objective<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW150408682 BCX8\"> was to closely examine the wear of the objects and to take the<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW150408682 BCX8\"> weight of each item to calculate the silver content of the hoard. <\/span><\/span><span class=\"EOP SCXW150408682 BCX8\" data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:278}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span class=\"TextRun SCXW36306319 BCX8\" lang=\"EN-GB\" xml:lang=\"EN-GB\" data-contrast=\"auto\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW36306319 BCX8\">Re-examining the coins allowed <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW36306319 BCX8\">us<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW36306319 BCX8\"> to substantially update the original <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW36306319 BCX8\">coin <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW36306319 BCX8\">catalogue published<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW36306319 BCX8\"> more than<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW36306319 BCX8\"> a century ago.\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW36306319 BCX8\">The latest coins in the hoard were <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW36306319 BCX8\">minted in Milan and <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW36306319 BCX8\">issued <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW36306319 BCX8\">under the emperor Honorius <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW36306319 BCX8\">(<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW36306319 BCX8\">395-40<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW36306319 BCX8\">2<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW36306319 BCX8\">).<\/span>\u00a0<span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW36306319 BCX8\">In looking at the design and inscriptions on the coins, <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW36306319 BCX8\">Kelly was also able to <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW36306319 BCX8\">determine<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW36306319 BCX8\"> several of the <em>siliquae<\/em> were possibly <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW36306319 BCX8\">irregular and probably <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW36306319 BCX8\">co<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW36306319 BCX8\">ntemporary copies<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW36306319 BCX8\">. <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW36306319 BCX8\">These<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW36306319 BCX8\"> coins enable us to <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW36306319 BCX8\">consider wider questions surrounding the production, <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW36306319 BCX8\">supply<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW36306319 BCX8\"> and <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW36306319 BCX8\">demand for coinage <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW36306319 BCX8\">in the late Roman period<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW36306319 BCX8\">. <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW36306319 BCX8\">Most of the coins <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW36306319 BCX8\">were also lightly clipped around their edges \u2013 a <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW36306319 BCX8\">phenomenon that occurred in the later fourth and early-mid fifth centur<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW36306319 BCX8\">ies.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span class=\"TextRun SCXW28775777 BCX8\" lang=\"EN-GB\" xml:lang=\"EN-GB\" data-contrast=\"auto\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW28775777 BCX8\">The spoons in the hoard displayed evidence of typical wear. We know that the owners of the spoons were right-handed based on the worn front-left edges of the spoon bowls.<\/span><\/span><span class=\"EOP SCXW28775777 BCX8\" data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:278}\"> What&#8217;s more interesting, though, is the possibility that the spoons were also carefully clipped in a similar way to the siliquae.
