We had a good day engaging with the public through interactive coin identification tasks, 3D models of hoard containers, and lively discussion.

Many visitors already had some knowledge about the late Roman period, and we were very pleased to hear that they left having learned something new about late Roman hoards and society in fifth-century Britain. One visitor who collected Roman coins hadn’t realised how silver coins continued to circulate after the end of Roman rule in Britain. We spent a long time chatting about the clipping phenomenon and the transition to a bullion economy. Another visitor who said they were writing a popular book about Roman Britain was surprised to learn that some late Roman hoards were buried much later in the fifth century than previously thought.

It was great to connect with the public and we are looking forward to our remaining outreach activities planned in September at Worthing Museum and Salisbury Museum.

We put together these two information banners about the project for our workshops.
