{"id":671,"date":"2017-10-30T13:10:56","date_gmt":"2017-10-30T13:10:56","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/history\/?p=671"},"modified":"2017-10-30T13:15:04","modified_gmt":"2017-10-30T13:15:04","slug":"canterbury-in-domesday-book-a-lecture-in-memory-of-professor-alf-smyth","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/history\/2017\/10\/30\/canterbury-in-domesday-book-a-lecture-in-memory-of-professor-alf-smyth\/","title":{"rendered":"Canterbury in Domesday Book: A lecture in memory of Professor Alf Smyth"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>On Friday 27 October 2017 friends and colleagues from the School of History, the Canterbury Archaeological Trust, and Canterbury Christ Church University gathered together in Grimond Lecture Theatre 1 on the University of Kent&#8217;s Canterbury campus to celebrate the life of Professor Alf Smyth.<\/p>\n<p>Professor Smyth, <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/staff-student-news\/2016\/10\/25\/condolences-for-alfred-smyth\/\" target=\"_blank\">who passed away in October 2016<\/a>, was an Emeritus Professor of Medieval History, specialising in the British Isles. His publications included\u00a0<i>Scandinavian Kings in the British Isles<\/i><em>,\u00a0<i>Warlords and Holy Men: Scotland AD 80-1000<\/i><\/em>. and a highly influential study of <i>King Alfred the Great<\/i>.<\/p>\n<p>His distinguished career also saw him take on the roles of Warden of St. George&#8217;s House, Windsor Castle; Director of Research; and Dean of Arts &amp; Humanities (both Canterbury Christ Church University).
