Anti-Bullying Week 2020 will take place from Monday 16th November &#8211; Friday 20th November 2020. The theme is United Against Bullying.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<h3>Were you bullied as a child? Or are you being bullied at work?<\/h3>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p class=\"p-introduction\">We know there can be significant long term effects of experiencing bullying as a child. Bullying is a traumatic thing to experience and it in no-way makes you &#8216;weak&#8217; to still be feeling the impact of it now. You may also be finding it hard to cope if you were the person who was bullying others. It is inevitable that at some point the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bullying.co.uk\/bullying-at-work\/how-workplace-bullying-can-affect-your-family\/\"><strong>bullying at work will impact on your life at home<\/strong><\/a>. Talking with your partner or family might not be easy because you have such close emotional ties but think about how you would feel if your felt your partner was keeping something from you and how you would want to support them. \u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p><strong>So what can you do to take control of your own emotional wellbeing and help you through these difficulties?<\/strong><\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<ul>\r\n<li>A diary can be a great way of expressing how you are feeling and can also aid in ensuring you have a written account of what has been going on.<\/li>\r\n<li>Take some time out to think about how you are really feeling \u2013 many people feel scared, stressed, anxious and low in confidence.\u00a0 If you recognise any of these signs and feel it would help to take some time out from work then make an appointment to see your GP.\u00a0<\/li>\r\n<li><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/familylives.org.uk\/advice\/your-family\/parenting\/coping-with-life-s-ups-and-downs\/\">Stress can have a devastating impact on emotional health<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0and it might mean that taking a couple of weeks off work might help you to feel calmer.<\/li>\r\n<li>Don\u2019t feel guilty or ashamed because you need some time out \u2013\u00a0<strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.bullying.co.uk\/bullying-at-work\/workplace-bullying\/\">workplace bullying<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0is not acceptable and can have a debilitating effect on physical and emotional health. Ask your GP if there is any counselling you can access. See the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy to<strong>\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.bacp.co.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">find a counsellor in your area<\/a><\/strong>.\u00a0<\/li>\r\n<li>Check your insurance documents \u2013 some household insurance policies include a counselling helpline so this might be something you could look into.<\/li>\r\n<li>Join a\u00a0<strong><a href=\"http:\/\/forum.familylives.org.uk\/forums\/issues\/workplace-bullying\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">bullying at work suppport\u00a0forum<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0where you can find others that are going through something similar. We have a forum dedicated to workplace bullying and it can be comforting to know that there are others out there going through something similar in a safe environment.\u00a0 You can share experiences and tips on what might have worked for you.\u00a0<\/li>\r\n<li>Take control and get some\u00a0<strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.acas.org.uk\/index.aspx?articleid=1461\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">legal advice on bullying at work from\u00a0<\/a><a href=\"http:\/\/www.acas.org.uk\/index.aspx?articleid=1461\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">ACAS<\/a>\u00a0<\/strong>(Advisory Concilliation and Arbitration Service).\u00a0 They are there to give advice to both employees and employers.\u00a0 It\u2019s important to find out exactly where you stand and what rights you have as this can be really empowering.<\/li>\r\n<li>Speak to a support service where you can talk your situation through with a trained support worker. Sometimes just a listening ear can help \u2013 you could call our<a href=\"https:\/\/familylives.org.uk\/how-we-can-help\/confidential-helpline\/\">\u00a0free confidential helpline on 0808 800 2222<\/a>\u00a0or\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/familylives.org.uk\/how-we-can-help\/online-chat\/\">chat to us live online<\/a>\u00a0or there is also the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.samaritans.org\/\">Samaritans<\/a>\u00a0<\/li>\r\n<li>Think about your options \u2013 are things so stressful that you feel you have to leave for the sake of your health, or do you feel that you are strong enough to fight this and are going to make a stand.<\/li>\r\n<li>Is it worth dipping your toe in the water and researching other job opportunities just to get a feel of what other jobs are out there.<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<h2>Looking after yourself<\/h2>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>These are all steps that you can take for yourself if you are\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bullying.co.uk\/bullying-at-work\/workplace-bullying\/\">being bullied at work<\/a>.\u00a0 Some will be harder than others but it is crucial that you remind yourself how important it is for you to look after \u201cyou\u201d.\u00a0 We know that stress can affect blood pressure so it\u2019s always worthwhile arranging regular checkups with your GP to make sure you are staying healthy.\u00a0 Listen to what your body is telling you and don\u2019t ignore any\u00a0<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bullying.co.uk\/bullying-at-work\/the-signs-of-workplace-bullying\/\">signs\u00a0of bullying<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0that might be telling you that your body might be struggling.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>Finding a hobby or an exercise that will help you to relax can also be another great strategy of trying to ensure that you stay calm and healthy. Here\u2019s a few ideas that might help:-<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<ul>\r\n<li>Going for a swim before or after work might help to calm the brain and put you in a good frame of mind.\u00a0<\/li>\r\n<li>A walk in the countryside or to the beach can also be another wonderful tonic.<\/li>\r\n<li>Meditation can be a great way of encouraging the mind to switch off and relax.<\/li>\r\n<li>Getting out on your bike with the family<\/li>\r\n<li>Tai Chi or yoga can also help to balance mind, body and soul.<\/li>\r\n<li>If you\u2019re feeling more energetic perhaps you could try an exercise class or some martial arts.<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>It doesn\u2019t have to cost a lot of money to stay healthy and less stressed \u00a0\u2013 there is plenty that you can do which involves no cost.
