Appointment of Chair and Deputy Chair of Council

Council has appointed Sir David Warren as the new Chair of Council from 1 August 2014 until 31 July 2017.

Sir David Warren served as British Ambassador to Japan from 2008 to 2012. Following language training in Japanese, he was first appointed to Japan in the late 1970s. His career since then has included a term as Assistant Head of the Far East Department at the FCO and five years in Tokyo as Commercial Counsellor, 1993-1998. He has also served as Head of the FCO’s China Hong Kong Department and Director of UK Trade and Investment. He was Director of Human Resources at FCO before going to Tokyo as Ambassador. He is currently the Chair of The Japan Society of the UK.

Council has reappointed Tony Quigley as Deputy Chair of Council for a further year until 31 July 2015.

Congratulations to the School of Politics and the Tizard Centre

Council congratulated:

  • School of Politics and International Relations on 3 successful applications to the European Union to establish:  a Jean Monnet Centre of Excellence; a Jean Monnet Chair and a Jean Monnet Multilateral Research Group;.
  • Tizard Centre for the award of the Queen’s Anniversary Prize for Higher and Further Education for its work on learning disability and community care.

Congratulations to Staff

Senate and Council, at their meetings in October 2013, congratulated the following on their recent success

Dominic Abrams, Professor of Social Psychology on being elected as a Fellow of the British Academy. 

David Ormrod, Professor of Economic and Cultural History on being elected as an Academician of the Academy of Social Sciences (AcSS).

Dr Will Norman, Lecturer in American Literature in the University’s School of English, has received a prestigious Fulbright Scholarship.

University Successes

 Senate and Council, at their meetings in October 2013, noted the following successes:

Shortlisted for Times Higher Education Awards

 The University has been shortlisted for two Times Higher Education Awards

  •  Excellence & Innovation in the Arts in recognition of its development, innovation and investment in the arts:
  • ICT Initiative of the Year for commitment to develop and promote a high quality learning experience through innovative teaching methods in relation to the use of  immersive technologies, to enable students and child protection professionals undertaking continuing professional development to practice and discuss difficult child protection cases in safe environments.

Donation for the Law Clinic

The University has received a £1m donation from The Hon Charles Wigoder as part of its fundraising campaign to build a new home for the Kent Law Clinic.

World Architecture News ‘Facade of the Year Award’ for Kent School of Architecture

The Kent School of Architecture Crit Building has won World Architecture News ‘Facade of the Year Award.’

Council Confirms University Budget for 2013-14

Council considered the University’s recruitment of new students for 2013 at its meeting on on 11 October 2013 and in the light of the favourable outcome confirmed the University’s budgets for 2013-14.
