A key person that has ensured the programme&#8217;s consistent delivery of excellence is\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.kent.ac.uk\/religious-studies\/people\/1664\/de-vries-leslie\">Dr Leslie de Vries<\/a>, a\u00a0historian of medicine and religion in East Asia.<\/p>\n<p>His latest publication includes &#8216;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.taylorfrancis.com\/chapters\/oa-edit\/10.4324\/9780203740262-39\/vietnam-pre-modern-period-leslie-de-vries?context=ubx&amp;refId=eeb2e55b-ca80-4098-99a6-c7664f387f94\">Vietnam in the Pre-Modern Period<\/a>&#8216;, a chapter in the recently released<em>\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.taylorfrancis.com\/books\/oa-edit\/10.4324\/9780203740262\/routledge-handbook-chinese-medicine-vivienne-lo-michael-stanley-baker-dolly-yang\">Routledge Handbook of Chinese Medicine<\/a><\/em>, edited by Vivienne Lo, Michael Stanley-Baker, and Dolly Yang.<\/p>\n<p>In this piece, Dr\u00a0Leslie de Vries examines how Chinese (or \u2018Northern\u2019) medicine was practised in pre-modern Vietnam during the second millennium when Vietnam was independent from China but not yet colonised by the French. \u00a0He pointed out that\u00a0&#8216;a small\u00a0but substantial amount of sources, written in H\u00e1n and representative of Chinese (or northern)\u00a0medicine, dating back to the period between the fourteenth and nineteenth centuries\u00a0has survived, but attracted hardly any attention from English-language scholars.&#8217; He argued that &#8216;the study\u00a0of these texts in combination with other surviving sources, and in comparison with dynamics\u00a0in medicine in other parts of East Asia&#8230;<span style=\"font-size: 14px\">\u00a0will offer more\u00a0<\/span>complex narratives and promises to go beyond the history of grand narratives that has\u00a0dominated the field.&#8217;<\/p>\n<p>The book is open access.
