Professor Silvio Funtowicz will open GSEJ’s seminar series with a renewed examination on science, expertise and decision making on 5 October.
Professor Funtowicz coined the term post-normal science (PNS), Together with Jerome R. Ravetz in the 1990s. His article Science for the post-normal age (1993) is still the most cited paper in its field in the journal Futures. The paper was recently republished in May 2020 with a new foreword related to the Covid-19 pandemic.
In this talk, Professor Funtowics uses the COVID pandemic as an entry point to open up examinations on how a PNS lens can guide decision-making and political action in the context of persistent extreme inequalities, weak democratic institutions, growing authoritarian temptations, and fantasies of techno-scientific silver bullets.
We are delighted to have two experts from our collaborating institutions in Asia who will join as discussants:
Dr. Krishna Ravi Srinivas, Senior Fellow, & Consultant, Managing Editor of Asian Biotechnology & Development Review, Research and Information System for Developing Countries (RIS), India (Twitter: @KRavisrinivas)
Dr. Miao Liao, Associate Professor, Department of Philosophy, Changsha University of Science and Technology, China. She previously worked at CASTED, a think tank affiliated with China’s Ministry of Science and Technology for three years.
This cosmopolitan discussion on PNS is free and open to all. It can be registered here: https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/why-science-doesnt-speak-with-one-voice-tickets-407407004317
