On 31 May, Director Joy Y. Zhang visited the Lise Meitner Research Group at the Max Planck Institute for the History of Science and delivered the public lecture, ‘Can We Trust Science from China?’.
In the talk, Zhang first pointed out that the disparity within China’s Whole Nation Approach to research and development. She unpacked evolving compositions of Chinese scientific community and the latent effect of political censorship on research. She also warned that comparing the impact of political tension today on science to that of the Cold Was could be an act of ignorance and complacency. The event was attended by approximately 70 scholars. Zhang’s thoughtful and refreshing perspective generated one of the most vibrant discussions in the lecture series.
